  • (G) Fred Vanvleet – 37.2 MPG | 17.0 PPG | 4.0 RPG | 7.2 APG

The Toronto Raptors haven’t missed a beat since they’ve rejoined the NBA season. Reigning champions, the Toronto Raptors boast one of the NBA’s most efficient offenses and defenses. Captained by rising star Pascal Siakam.

The Raptors currently boast a top ten rated offence and defence. They may not be the fastest team in the NBA, but they are certainly efficient enough in the half-court in order to make up for it.

The Raptors will be in their first defining match of the season when they take on the Milwaukee Bucks. With no Kawhi Leonard at their disposal, OG Anunoby and Pascal Siakam will have to prove they can stop the Greek Freak.

Milwaukee Bucks (Home)

Head Coach: Mike Budenholzer {All-Time 275-221 | ATL, MIL}

Season Record: 275-221

Projected Starting Five: (G) Eric Bledsoe – (G) Wesley Matthews – (F) Khris Middleton – (F) Giannis Antetokounmpo – (C) Brook Lopez

Top Performers

  • (F) Giannis Antetokounmpo – 32.3 MPG | 23.8 PPG | 13.5 RPG | 8.0 APG
  • (F) Khris Middleton – 33.3 MPG | 20.8 PPG | 6.5 RPG | .419 3P%
  • (C) Brook Lopez – 29.0 MPG | 12.3 PPG | 4.3 RPG | .304 3P%

The Milwaukee Bucks have been off to a good start, but have been failing to close matches against some of the stronger opponents. Against both the Heat and the Celtics, the Bucks have failed to perform in the clutch.

Overall, the Milwaukee Bucks are performing similarly to last season. They’ve added an adept new shooter in Wes Matthews and continue to lean on superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and sidekick Khris Middleton.

It will certainly be an emotional game, as the last time these two teams faced off the Bucks lost four matches in a row to send them home from the NBA Playoffs. Giannis hasn’t been scoring as much as last season, but will surely be motivated for this match up.

What’s at Stake for Raptors vs Bucks?

The Toronto Raptors and the Milwaukee Bucks own a younger rivalry than most in the current state of the NBA. In 89 regular-season meetings, the Bucks lead the Raptors 51-38.

A win for the Toronto Raptors would establish them as clear contenders after their championship season, despite losing Kawhi Leonard.

A win for the Milwaukee Bucks would be step one in their path to redemption over the same team that knocked them out of the Eastern Conference Finals.

Will the Toronto Raptors’ Quality Stand Out?

Not many teams can face down the sheer strength of Giannis Antetokounmpo, as well as their secondary shooters that surround him. The Toronto Raptors have quality across the board that can put up a good fight.

The Toronto Raptors currently own one of the best two-way rosters in the NBA. Former defensive player of the year Marc Gasol captains their defense with Spanish national teammate Serge Ibaka. While Vanvleet, Siakam, and Lowry have powered their offense with little drop-off.

It is difficult for any team to contain a singularly talented threat like Antetokounmpo. However, with the Raptors’ very switchable defense, they should be able to limit him better than most. Their offense must stay efficient in order to keep up with Milwaukee’s eventual runs.

Can the Bucks Dominate the Paint?

The Milwaukee Bucks have a very defined inside-out game plan. With Antetokounmpo at the top of the key, there are few that can resist his paint attack. The Toronto Raptors, however, are uniquely equipped to deal with the Bucks’ game plan.

OG Anunoby, Kyle Lowry, and Pascal Siakam are all excellent wing defenders. Backing them in the paint are two All-NBA level defenders in Serge Ibaka and Marc Gasol. Converting at the rim will be more difficult for the Bucks.

Milwaukee may have to rely on their kick game if they hope to beat the Raptors. They are shooting only 35.5% from deep, so they will have to hope for some decent shooting runs early to get some cushion.

How Will Gasol Perform?

Toronto Raptors center Marc Gasol has had a varied start to the season. He has struggled, bounced back, then struggled again in the span of only five games. He is still a consistent defensive presence, but his struggles on offense are notable.

In his last game against the Pistons, Gasol played only 14 minutes. He wasn’t dominated by Andre Drummond, but his slow feet against smaller lineups are generally a liability. He will have to match up with stretch big man Brook Lopez against the Bucks.

Gasol is an adept paint protector. However, his ability to cope with the Bucks’ drive and kick offense early will affect his minutes in this match. Bet on him to be involved early, with a quick hook if it doesn’t work out.

Milwaukee Must Compete on the Glass

The Bucks are an average rebounding team at best. They are strong on their own glass but don’t put in any work on the offensive glass – evidenced by their league bottom-six offensive boards per game.

On the other hand, the Toronto Raptors are the NBA’s second-best team in the rebounding department. They average almost 50 rebounds per game and can get on the glass from every position.

The Bucks must be passable on the boards to beat Toronto. Not only will they not have many second chances, but the Raptors’ wings and bigs have the energy to keep the ball alive on the offensive end.

X-Factors: (F) Pascal Siakam vs (F) Giannis Antetokounmpo

This match will feature two of the East’s youngest and most exciting young superstars. Giannis Antetokounmpo is coming off of a disappointing, yet MVP-calibre season. Meanwhile, Siakam doesn’t seem far behind in his footsteps to win MVP.

The future of these teams and this match will be dependent on the play of these young forwards.

(F) Pascal Siakam (6-9, 230lb (206cm, 104kg) | New Mexico State | 3 Years)

Is there a singularly more impressive player growth seen across the NBA than that of Pascal Siakam? The NBA’s reigning Most Improved Player, Siakam is making a case for himself to be the first to win the title two years in a row.

While he won’t see the bulk of his defensive duties guarding Giannis Antetokounmpo, he will certainly have to manage him for small periods of time. He will be tasked with challenging him on the offensive end, as Siakam’s attacking game is varied enough to give the Greek real problems.

(F) Giannis Antetokounmpo (6-11, 242lb (211cm, 109kg) | Greece | 6 Years)

Giannis Antetokounmpo still looks like the MVP. He is as dominant as ever on the offensive and defensive end but hasn’t truly improved on his weaknesses since last year. His three-point shooting is still abysmal, though he is taking more attempts per game than ever before.

He will have to make Siakam work for his points. Anteteokounmpo has the length to bother the versatile Cameroonian but will have to play safe as Siakam is one of the best at drawing fouls.

Toronto Raptors at Milwaukee Bucks – Predictions

Why the Toronto Raptors Will Win

The Toronto Raptors look every bit the NBA Champions that they are. They can beat the early odds if they can manage the Bucks’ three-point barrage and limit Antetokounmpo as much as possible. Toronto will also need more contributions from their star center Marc Gasol.

Why the Milwaukee Bucks Will Win

If Milwaukee fulfills their potential and rains down from three-point range, they can easily take the night from the Raptors. Defensively they will have to be very switchable, as Toronto causes teams fits by creating mismatches.
