Can the Warriors Showcase Wiseman?
The Golden State Warriors will have the odds against them when they face the Brooklyn Nets. While they’ve improved over the summer, they are still lacking in the kind of depth that can compete with the Nets. Where the Warriors can show some strength is with their top rookie James Wiseman.
James Wiseman may not have a full season of NCAA basketball under his belt, but his talents are unquestionable. A capable low-post player and finisher, with massive potential on the defensive side of the ball, Wiseman is a presence that the Warriors haven’t had in a long time.
With Curry drawing most of the attention, Wiseman is likely to be the target of many drop-offs and lobs at the rim. The main issue will be Wiseman’s ability on the defensive side of the ball. Can he navigate the high-speed screening action in the NBA? Time will tell, but he’s sure to give the Nets frontcourt all they can handle.

Is Steve Nash the Right Man for the Job?
The Brooklyn Nets made a big splash last offseason when they acquired Kevin Durant in free agency, despite the fact that he’d be unavailable for that season. They were even more impressive as they qualified for the 2020 NBA Playoffs, despite being swept in the first round by the Toronto Raptors. After firing Kenny Atkinson and bringing in Steve Nash, many are excited to see how he manages the new-look Nets.
Through the preseason we’ve been able to see Steve Nash’s interest in a more fluid type of offence, looking to encourage the talent and improvisation of his stars, rather than manage from the clipboard. While the sample pool is small, the Nets have been more than productive on the offensive end in the preseason, averaging 116.0 points per game on 46.9% from the field.
Nash has some great people on his staff as well, including Ime Udoka and his former coach Mike D’Antoni. Time will tell whether or not his freestyle offensive plan will pay off, but against one of the worst defensive teams in the league last year the Nets should have some leeway with the Warriors.

Warriors Key Players: (G) Stephen Curry & (F) Draymond Green
The Golden State Warriors are coming off of a league-worst season, right after making the NBA Finals. Injury-riddled and lacking in-depth, the Warriors are hoping to find their magic in this new NBA campaign. Led by former two-time MVP and former Defensive Player of the Year Draymond Green.
Curry played in just five games through the 2019-2020 NBA season, but averages 23.5 points, 6.6 assists, and 4.5 rebounds on 40.2% shooting from the field and 43.5% shooting from three for his career. More of a defensive presence, Green averages 1.4 steals and 1.1 blocks per game for his career.
While they have exciting young pieces in Oubre Jr and Wiseman, Curry and Green are still the cornerstones of their franchise. Setting the tone on both ends of the court will be crucial for them to succeed against the Nets.
Nets Key Players: (F) Kevin Durant & (G) Kyrie Irving
Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving appeared in a combined 20 games last season. All 20 of those matches being played by Kyrie Irving. As they enter the 2020-2021 season, they are potentially one of the best scoring duos in the entire league.
Head Coach Steve Nash is allowing his team to operate a free-flowing style of offence, led by Irving and Durant. With Irving’s ability to facilitate, on top of the option of Durant’s one-on-one ability, Irving could quickly take advantage of Curry on the defensive side.
The defence will be keyed in on Durant and Irving, so acting as playmakers as much as they do as scorers is important for them. Ranked 15th in the NBA in assists last season, players at the level of Irving and Durant should create a number of opportunities for others to overcome the Warriors defence.
