Green Bay vs San Francisco – Game Preview
In one of the most exciting matchups of Week 12, the 8-2 Green Bay Packers travel to Santa Clara California to take on the 9-1 San Francisco 49ers on Sunday Night Football, with both teams in first place of their divisions and looking like postseason shoe-ins.
While Aaron Rodgers and his Packers were getting some rest and recalibrating their game plan on their Week 11 bye, the 49ers were busy chalking up their ninth win of the season over an Arizona Cardinals team that’s trickier to beat than their 3-7 record would indicate.
Green Bay loves to beat teams with their offense and San Francisco tends to win weekly courtesy of their excellent defense, so here we compare the two teams to get a better idea of how they matchup for this Week 12 SNF confrontation.
The 8-2-0 Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers should be ready to go after their bye week of rest, and they are most likely still riding the high after beating the Carolina Panthers, 24-16, in Week 10, their fifth win in six weeks coming at home in Lambeau Field where they are 5-1 this season.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ offense can score (they average 25 points per game) but their passing attack is better than their rushing attack despite Aaron Jones having a decent season with 11 touchdowns and averaging 4.4 yards per carry.
Where the 49ers will most likely hurt the Packers on Sunday night is on the ground – Green Bay’s rush defense is ranked 25th in the league and San Francisco is currently second-best on the ground, so Mike Pettine’s squad had better figure out how to fill those gaps quickly or they might just get trampled on the road.
The 9-1-0 San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers are coming off a ten-point win over the Arizona Cardinals and most likely feel like they can beat just about anybody these days, something that will be tough to prove for the rest of the season given their upcoming opponents – Packers, Ravens, Saints, Falcons, Rams, and Seahawks.
Some argue that the 49ers haven’t beaten any excellent teams yet, so this matchup with the Packers in Week 12 will be the perfect opportunity for Jimmy Garoppolo’s bunch to prove that they can win the big games too, they just haven’t had the chance yet.
With a stellar run game and an even better defense, the only thing lacking with this team right now is their ability to complete the pass on offense and stop the pass on defense, two weaknesses that head coach Kyle Shanahan had best address before postseason play begins.
Packers vs 49ers History
These two NFC rivals have met 67 total times (including 7 postseason games), with Green Bay winning 36 of those times and San Francisco winning the other 30 games, plus there’s been one tie.
The last time these two teams played was last season in October when the 49ers traveled to Green Bay only to lose by a field goal to the Packers, the final score Green Bay 33, San Francisco 30.
If the Packers win this matchup, they’ll move to 9-2-0 and continue to stay apace with their only AFC North competition right now, the Minnesota Vikings, who enter into their Week 12 bye with an 8-2 record.
But if the 49ers come out winners in this one, they’ll be 10-1-0 and stay in front of the Seattle Seahawks by at least a game and continue to fight the Saints for the NFC’s number one playoff seed and the home-field advantage that comes with it.

Offensive Stats Comparison
Green Bay Packers Overall Offense
- Ranked 17th overall in 2019
- Passing attack currently ranked 11th
- Rushing attack currently ranked 18th
Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers might not impress statistically, but they do get the job done on the scoreboard, averaging 25 points per game in the ten games that they have played, good enough to get them to eight wins already.
You wouldn’t know that their rushing attack is ranked in the middle of the pack if you watched Aaron Jones run against the Panthers in Week 10 when he ran for 93 yards on 13 carries for 3 touchdowns, bringing his season total to 11 touchdowns, plus the three receiving touchdowns he’s also posted.
The Packs’ offensive line could keep old man Rodgers safer – right now they have allowed opponents to sack him 22 times, which is tied for 16th most in the league, something to consider when your quarterback has notoriously bad knees.
San Francisco 49ers Overall Offense
- Ranked 5th overall in 2019
- Passing attack currently ranked 15th
- Rushing attack currently ranked 2nd
If the San Francisco 49ers have any weakness on offense it’s their passing game, and what hasn’t helped is quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s 10 interceptions, a clear sign that he has to take better care of the ball.
The 49ers will beat you on the ground with a double-headed rushing attack starring Matt Breida and Tevin Coleman, their one-two punch good enough to average almost 150 yards on the ground per game.
The best thing about the 49ers’ offense is that it can score – they average 27.5 points per game and right now in the league that’s second-best only to the high-scoring Baltimore Ravens – and when you have the second-best defense in the league, that will definitely win you some games.
Right now, the San Francisco 49ers have the better offense and so they have the advantage on that side of the ball, but the Packers have Aaron Rodgers, so at any given point that advantage could definitely shift.
Defensive Stats Comparison
Green Bay Packers Overall Defense
- Ranked 28th overall in 2019
- Passing defense currently ranked 23rd
- Rushing defense currently ranked 25th
This is where the Green Bay Packers come up short – coordinator Mike Pettine’s squad looked good in the beginning of the year, but they have been slowly slipping to the back of the pack as the season moves on.
The Packers’ defense allows opponents to score 20.5 points and move the ball almost 385 yards per game, something that even Aaron Rodgers is having a difficult time to overcome.
Right now, cornerback Tremon Smith (concussion) and linebacker Ty Summers (concussion) are listed as questionable for this Week 12 matchup, so hopefully, the bye week gave them enough time to get healthy enough to play in this one.
San Francisco 49ers Overall Defense
- Ranked 2nd overall in 2019
- Passing defense currently ranked 1st
- Rushing defense currently ranked 20th
It’s odd how excellent the San Francisco 49ers are against the pass (ranked 1st) when you compare it to how mediocre they are against the run (ranked 20th), something that will affect the way the Packers game plan against them.
The 49ers only allow opponents to pass for 142.5 yards per game – that leads the league – and they have 11 interceptions and their 39 sacks on opponents’ quarterbacks are tied for the most in the NFL right now.
Nick Bosa, Dee Ford, Arik Armstead, Richard Sherman – these are the defensive names that are putting the fear of sack and pick in whatever team the 49ers play, so it will be fun to watch how they decide to manhandle these Packers.
The defensive advantage goes absolutely to the San Francisco 49ers – they have been far more successful on that side of the ball so far this season, but the Packers have the “Preston Brothers” so at any point the defensive advantage could always turn into theirs.
Packers vs 49ers – Final Game Analysis
Why Will the Packers Win this Game?
Green Bay can win this one if they figure out a way to slow down the 49ers’ killer run game – because once you neutralize that part of their game plan, the onus of the offense shifts to Jimmy Garoppolo, and that will be a lot easier for the Packers’ defense to focus on and defend.
It would also help if the Smith Brothers (linebackers Za’Darius and Preston) could put tremendous pressure on Jimmy G – he’s only been sacked 19 times this season so he’s not used to that kind of attention and it could cause him to make a few mistakes on the panicked run.
Green Bay can’t win this one if Aaron Rodgers plays as he did in Week 10 against the Panthers – an what would help him do that is if his deep thread wide receiver Davante Adams healed his toe enough over the bye week to be a factor, since the two of them can be absolutely deadly when healthy.
Why Will the 49ers Win this Game?
The main thing that will help this 49ers team win is if they can show up healthy – with running back Matt Breida (ankle) and wide receivers Deebo Samuel (shoulder) and Emmanuel Sanders (ribs) listed as questionable, their offense could suffer as a result.
Of course, when you have a defense like the 49ers do, it’s usually enough to shut down your opponents for the win, but again it all depends who shows up in good shape – right now, linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair (concussion), defensive end Dee Ford (hamstring) and defensive tackle D.J. Jones (groin) are all listed as questionable, so that could hamper the squad’s typical effectiveness.
Regardless of who suits up on Sunday night, San Francisco will win if they can get after Aaron Rodgers, who can’t scramble like he used to, something the Panthers figured out how to do two weeks ago, which forced coordinator Nathaniel Hackett to switch his offensive attack over to the run game.
Packers vs 49ers Final Score
Our prediction is that the San Francisco 49ers will win this one. Their defense will get to Aaron Rodgers and slow him down enough for the 49ers’ run game to gradually outscore him by a touchdown.
John Breech of CBS Sports predicts the score as 49ers 30, Packers 20.
My prediction for the final score is 49ers 27, Packers 20.
