After Week 1’s embarrassing loss, expect Rodgers and his talented Packers to cover this widespread against this porous Lions defense at home on Monday Night Football.
Bet on the Packers Here!
New Detroit franchise quarterback Jared Goff looked decent in his Lions debut posting 38 completions and 3 touchdowns with a pick while scoring 23 second half ‘garbage time’ points, now facing an NFC North battle, another chance to utilize his young tight end T.J. Hockenson, the star-to-be posting 8 receptions for almost a hundred yards and a touchdown last week.
Ouch, the Green Bay Packers got totally blown out by the New Orleans Saints in Week 1, final score 38-3, with HC Matt LaFleur’s team taking an embarrassing loss that some blame on an unhappy Aaron Rodgers who uncharacteristically threw two interceptions and zero touchdowns in that loss, now with a chance to put all his talented playmakers to good use against the Lions.
These two teams have met each other 183 previous times (including 2 postseason games), with the Green Bay Packers winning 104 of those games and the Detroit Lions winning 72 games. They have also tied 7 times.
Can Lions QB Jared Goff Run Dan Campbell’s Offense?
The Detroit Lions lost their franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford this offseason in an odd trade with the Los Angeles Rams for their quarterback Jared Goff, the former Super Bowl QB now stuck in a city that hasn’t experienced postseason bliss in quite some time.
Now instead of clashing with his old Rams coach Sean McVay for whatever reasons, Goff has new Lions head coach Dan Campbell to work with, the former Saints tight ends coach who was hired to reignite these lifeless Lions.
In Week 1, Goff completed 38 passes for 338 yards and 3 touchdowns with an interception in the team’s 33-41 loss to the San Francisco Giants, a good sign that he works well with his new teammates and coaches, but can he do the same in Green Bay is the question.
Can the Packers’ Playmakers Step Up and Score at Home?
After an embarrassing Week 1 loss to the New Orleans Saints, 3-38, where Green Bay’s offense only managed to pass for 186 yards and run for 43 yards more, the Packers are no doubt ready to prove that they are still serious about (and capable of) winning.
Playmakers like wide receivers Davante Adams, Randall Cobb, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and tight end Marcedes Lewis must let go of that prior disaster and re-connect with QB Rodgers for some offensive production after ranking last offensively in the league in Week 1.
Last season the Packers ranked first in the league in points scored per game at 31.8, so to post just a field goal last week is pathetic, so expect them to come out passing and scoring against these struggling Lions and regain their reputation as football winners.
Editor’s Picks
Lions Key Player: (WR) Tyrell Williams
Detroit starting wide receiver Tyrell Williams took a major hit in Week 1 and now he is in concussion protocol so he is listed as questionable for Week 2 and will most likely be a game-time decision made by head coach Dan Campbell.
Williams is in his sixth pro season, his first with the Lions, and in his pro career has posted almost 200 receptions for almost 3,200 total yards with 23 touchdowns, the NFL journeyman with 651 total yards and 6 touchdowns on 42 receptions in 2019 with the Oakland Raiders.
Before last season even got started, Williams was placed on season-ending injured reserve after suffering a torn labrum in his shoulder, so expect him to begin proving that he is healthy and ready to be a productive part of the Lions offense with the newly traded Goff.
Packers Key Player: (QB) Aaron Rodgers
As star quarterback Aaron Rodgers goes, so do the Green Bay Packers, and last week Rodgers and the Packers went straight down the football sewer throwing two interceptions and no touchdowns with just 15 completions in the team’s blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints, final score 3-38.
Any longtime fan of the Packers and of Rodgers knows this team has been made shaky by the unhappiness that he has expressed all offseason and that seems to be resurfacing at times in press conferences and now on the field in Week 1.
If last season’s league MVP is still serious about football and competing against the best, Week 2 against divisional rivals like the Lions and their relatively soft defense is the perfect place for him to prove he is still in it to win it for Green Bay.
