The Pittsburgh Steelers took their first loss of the season on Monday Night Football in Week 13 to the struggling Washington Football Team, final score 23-17, ending their string of 2020 victories at eleven, so now they face a Buffalo Bills team that seems ready on both sides of the ball to win in the postseason.
Currently, atop the AFC East, the 9-3 Buffalo Bills look playoff-bound being led by Josh Allen, a young quarterback who is progressing quickly to an NFL level and with a pass rush that keeps opposing QB’s backpedaling, this team looks able to beat just about anyone, maybe even these powerful Steelers.
These two AFC teams have played each other 26 prior times (including 3 postseason games), with the Buffalo Bills winning 10 of those games and the Pittsburgh Steelers winning the other 16 games.
Can the Pittsburgh Steeler Rebound From their First Loss?
Of all the NFL teams to end the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 11-0 run in the regular season, for it to be the struggling Washington Football Team seems shocking, especially given that their quarterback, Alex Smith, had finally just returned from having almost lost his leg to an injury and subsequent infection.
The mighty Steelers looked vulnerable in that loss – their normally incessant pass rush seemed slow and ineffective, and QB Ben Roethlisberger didn’t seem to have a legitimate game plan while the defense had trouble stopping Washington’s attacks.
The Bills are an entirely different beast, meaning they are good and have some momentum behind their season, so the Steeler had better come prepared to do battle because if they drop to 11-2 and the Browns win on Monday night, suddenly the AFC North looks more up for grabs.
Can QB Josh Allen Continue His Rise to the NFL Level?
Even though Josh Allen was a first-round pick (seventh selection overall), many experts agreed that of all the talented quarterbacks available in that draft class, he would require the most work to adapt his skills to the NFL level, particularly when it comes to accuracy.
Allen looks like he is having a blast proving those experts wrong, after having brought the Bills to the playoffs last season and while currently helping his team to an AFC East lead, a 9-3 record, and a central place in just about everybody’s playoff discussions.
So far this season, Allen has completed 299 passes for 3,403 yards and 26 touchdowns with just 8 interceptions, plus he has proven to be a threat to escape the pocket and run with the ball for a first down or more, currently with 87 carries for 322 yards and 6 more touchdowns.

Steelers Key Player: (K) Chris Boswell
It has not been the best season for Steelers kicker Chris Boswell, who is currently listed as the 13th ranked placekicker in the NFL, and that alone could prove to be a factor in this Week 14 battle with the Bills.
But then add to that the fact that Boswell is listed as questionable due to a hip injury, the same one that caused him to miss Week 13 when the team suffered its first loss of the season to the underdog Washington Football Team.
Boswell reportedly did not practice on Wednesday and will be a game-time decision by head coach Mike Tomlin, and in the meantime placekicker Matthew Wright has been promoted from Pittsburgh’s practice squad to the active roster and would take over kicking duties during this game if necessary.
Bills Key Player: (RB) Devin Singletary
Second-year running back Devin Singletary will be a huge key to a Bills victory, the young playmaker capable both as a rusher and a receiver who has proven to be a big part of QB Josh Allen’s offense.
So far on the season, Singletary has carried the ball 128 times for 544 yards and 1 touchdown, while also catching 31 passes for 229 yards with just one fumble, averaging almost 5 yards per touch in 2020.
These numbers could be bigger and most likely will be as Singletary continues to adjust to playing at the NFL level against professional defenses, and in Week 14 against the Steelers’ 6th ranked rushing defense it will be key for him to have a productive game that includes at least one or more visits to the end zone.
