Saints vs Buccaneers Predictions and Picks

The GOAT has his targets figured out – and in Tampa, there are plenty of them – so expect Tom Brady and his Bucs to get the home cannons booming as he takes care of Brees and his Saints to stay atop of the NFC South.

Pick:

Bucs -4 (-110)

Last week, the New Orleans Saints found a way to beat the Chicago Bears in overtime, final score 26-23, the 5-2 team led by QB Drew Brees now a game behind the Bucs in the NFC South, so a win here would do wonders for their divisional status.

When these two teams played in Week 1, the Bucs lost and their new (old) QB, Tom Brady, didn’t play very GOAT-like, throwing a pick-six and looking a tad rusty in his Tampa debut, though since that initial interception, Brady’s thrown for 20 TD’s and just 3 more INT’s (4 on the season) so it is safe to say he is officially warmed up.

These two NFC South rivals have played each other 57 times, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers winning 21 of those matchups and the New Orleans Saints winning 36 of those games.

Can the Saints and Drew Brees Outscore Brady’s Talented Offense?

The first question to answer is whether Saints quarterback Drew Brees can even play – right now he is listed as questionable due to a shoulder injury he is recovering from, though chances are if he can play at all he will definitely at least suit up and give it a go.

The Buccaneers score about a point more per game than the Saints do (TB scores 30.9 pts and NO scores 29.4 pts per game), so Tampa Bay will have a slight edge in that department, especially when you consider their defense is ranked slightly higher, as well.

Brees leads the league in completion percentage (73.1) but he has only thrown for 13 touchdowns this season, so assuming his main WR Michael Thomas (hamstring) can play, those two will have to find a way to connect more often in the end zone if they expect to win on Sunday night.

Can QB Tom Brady Continue to Utilize HC Bruce Arian’s Game Plans?

This is veteran QB Tom Brady’s first season on a new NFL team, so it is forgivable that he had a slow start to his 2020, tossing four interceptions in his first four games, causing many fans to have Jameis Winston flashbacks, much to their collective horror.

But even during that time, the team wen 3-1 and they are now a comfortable 6-2 and sitting atop the NFC South by a game, and a win in Week 9 will double that lead since the Saints are the only divisional rival threatening them right now.

Head coach Bruce Arians and Brady now seem on the same page, at last, and that offense is ranked 14th overall, 8th best in passing (plus Brady has thrown no picks since Week 4), so expect that new relationship to solidify even more as the season (and postseason) progresses.

Editor’s Picks

Saints Key Player: (RB) Alvin Kamara

One of the Saint’s best players is dual-threat running back Alvin Kamara, the former Tennessee Volunteer who is now in his fourth NFL season and a constant threat to run and catch the ball out of the New Orleans backfield.

So far this season, Kamara has carried the ball 87 times for 431 yards and 4 touchdowns, plus he has caught 55 passes for 556 yards and 3 more touchdowns.

For the Saints to beat the Bucs on Sunday night, they will have to be effective through the air and on the ground at the same time, and if Kamara can have a big game on both accounts, he can keep his Saints at least close in this tough matchup.

Buccaneers Key Player: (WR) Antonio Brown

This could get interesting since controversial WR Antonio Brown is expected to start for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team-jumping superstar now crashing at Tom Brady’s house until he can get settled into his newest hometown.

Brown was (is?) talented – but can he continue to play at that same level after taking a lot of time off to settle his off the field struggles?

Brown only played in one game in 2019, with Brady and his Pats, and in that game, he caught four passes for 56 yards and a touchdown, so keep an eye on him and the GOAT in this one since they obviously have a solid connection.
