New York May Soon Mandate Monthly Sports Betting Statements

The Empire State is close to taking its fight against problem gambling to a whole new level.

The New York Senate unanimously passed A10329 today, which would require regulated sportsbooks to send monthly betting statements. The Assembly previously approved the bill, allowing it to be sent to Governor Kathy Hochul’s desk for review. 

If she signs off on the legislation, the new requirement would begin on January 1, 2027.

The bill would require sportsbooks to provide the following monthly information on customer statements:

• Money deposited

• Money spent on wagers

• Total won

• Total lost

• Net win/loss

• Total number of wagers placed

• Time spent using the sportsbooks

• Itemized list of bonuses and credits

• Clearly share available responsible gambling tools

• Access to betting history

No lawmakers voted against the bill throughout the review process, making it likely that Hochul will soon sign the bill into law.

If passed, A10329 would make the massive New York online sports betting market the first to mandate monthly sports betting statements. However, other states desperate to fight problem gambling could soon follow. 

Keeping Bettors Informed

States around the US have been scrambling for a solution to the rise in problem gambling. Unfortunately, many proposals would also lead to significant cuts in the tax revenue generated by legal sports betting.

New York’s proposal would not directly affect that revenue, but it would help keep bettors informed about their activity. 

The hope is that monthly statements will help them to detect signs of problem gambling before it can get out of control. It would also promote responsible gambling habits and help bettors adhere to budgets.

Bettors worried about addiction can also use these statements for accountability purposes, allowing loved ones to help supervise their activity.
