According to the oddsmakers, Boston Uprising is tipped to win the upcoming match in the Season Playoffs of the 2023 season of the Overwatch League. With London Spitfire rated as two-to-one underdogs, the odds are in favor of Boston Uprising getting the win and advancing closer to the finals of the 2023 edition of the Overwatch League. Despite being rated as favorites, we don’t expect a landslide victory for the Boston Uprising, as the odds are pretty close.
From historical data comparing the two teams, we know that Boston Uprising has won 60% of all their matches against London Spitfire in the past. With so many roster changes in Overwatch, we would take this statistic with a grain of salt, as it is nearly impossible to determine the future performance of a team solely based on the number of wins in the past, especially with team members coming and going during and in between seasons.
Interestingly, both teams have been in better than decent form leading up to this upcoming match. In the last thirty days, Boston Uprising has played four matches, out of which they have won three. On the other hand, London Spitfire has played seven matches, with five wins and two losses. Accordingly, the win rate percentage for the last 30 days for Boston Uprising is 75%, while it stands at 71% for London Uprising. At this stage of the season, the competition is very tight and intense as all the remaining teams in the Overwatch League are vying for a spot in the finals.

Until 2023, Boston Uprising was a steady presence in the mid and lower-half of the standings of the Overwatch League. In 2022, they finished the regular season of the Overwatch League in 14th place, an improvement of a single position over their result from 2021. However, things started to take a turn for the better for the US-based team at the start of the 2023 season, when they finished 5th-8th place in the Overwatch League Pro-Am tournament.
Boston Uprising then went on to finish the Spring Stage Qualifiers in 4th place before cleaning out the competition and finishing the knockout stage in first place. They then strung together a couple of fourth-place finishes in Midseason Madness and in the Summer Stage Play-Ins before repeating their success from the Spring Stage Knockouts and finishing the Play-Ins stage in first place.
The team now finds itself in Group 1 of the Season Playoffs, featuring London Spitfire, Atlanta Reign, and Hangzhou Spark. The four teams, in addition to Group 2, will compete in a double elimination bracket in best-of-five contests, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Grand Finals of the tournament, scheduled to take place on October 1, 2023.
Besides Kalios and Twilight, who joined in January of this year, the rest of the Boston Uprising squad has been retained from 2022 and features Korean players birdring, Decay, smurf, LeeJaoGon, and Izayaki, who were all drafted into the team on December 23, 2022. It’s evident that the new roster has brought the team to previously unattainable levels of success, and we’re excited to see how far they will be able to go before the 2023 season comes to a close.
London Spitfire deserves credit for being recognized as one of the earliest winners of the Overwatch League. In 2018, the team took home the grand prize of $1,000,000 by winning the inaugural Overwatch League Season Playoffs. It could be argued that the team peaked early, because they have been unable to replicate the same level of success since then.
From 2019 onwards, the team has consistently featured in the mid-table standings, with their best result in recent times being achieved in September of this year, where they finished the Play-Ins of the Overwatch League 2023 in second place. Incidentally, the team that beat them to first in this high-stakes contest is their upcoming rival, Boston Uprising. London Spitfire is bound to have a chip on their shoulder and should be out for retribution since they had to fight their way back through the lower bracket of the West division of Play-Ins to finally reach the Playoffs.
With the exception of Finnish player Sauna, who joined in July 2023, London Spitfire’s roster has been fairly stable, consisting of players who have been on the team for at least a year. Apart from Sauna, the rest of the squad includes SparkR, Backbone, Hadi, Admiral, and Landon.
