How the NFL Season Is Shaping Up

The last three primetime games have all gone to overtime, and the pattern behind them says a lot about this season. Defense and special teams are deciding close games. The Broncos beat the Seahawks on Thursday with only 168 yards of total offense, winning on an overtime interception and a 53-yard field goal. The standings reflect that. The Broncos are 4-2 despite one of the league's least productive offenses, while the 49ers and Vikings are still the only 5-0 teams.

Two primetime games have been played since the Ravens beat the Falcons in overtime last Sunday, and both followed the same script. Each one went to overtime and was decided by a field goal:

1. Bills 37, Rams 34 (OT): Tyler Bass hit a 45-yard field goal in overtime for Josh Allen's 100th career win. Puka Nacua set a Monday Night Football record with 17 catches for 138 yards in the loss.

2. Broncos 17, Seahawks 14 (OT): Ja'Quan McMillian intercepted Sam Darnold in overtime and Wil Lutz kicked the winner from 53 yards. Bo Nix threw for only 107 yards.

Sunday's game is Cowboys at Packers at 8:20 PM ET on NBC and Peacock. The Packers are 3-2 and favored by 1.5 points at home, while the Cowboys are 2-3 after losing to the Buccaneers. Watson has 474 receiving yards and six touchdowns through five games, an average of 94.8 yards per game. He averages 18.2 yards per catch and just caught six passes for 143 yards and two scores against the Bears. The Cowboys rank 30th in passing yards allowed and give up 8.4 yards per pass attempt, so his big-play profile fits this matchup.

2. Jordan Love Passing Yards: Higher 274.5 (1x)

Love has thrown for 1,408 yards in five games, an average of 281.6 per game, and is coming off 367 yards against the Bears. The Cowboys allow a 72.4% completion rate, 30th in the NFL, and have only five sacks all season. That gives Love time to keep attacking downfield, where he went 6 of 8 for 258 yards last week.

3. CeeDee Lamb Receiving Yards: Higher 79.5 (1x)

Lamb leads the Cowboys with 507 receiving yards through five games, an average of 101.4 per game. His two-catch game against the Buccaneers came while he was playing through the quad bruise, and he had 17 catches for 189 yards the week before. The Packers allow only 181 passing yards per game, but if this turns into the shootout the passing numbers point to, Lamb is the Cowboys' first option.
