Club America vs Chivas Guadalajara Picks
- Our Pick: Club America to win.
Club America vs Chivas Guadalajara Prediction
Club America will head into the fixture as the overwhelming favorite to win. The club earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Club Leon in their last home match which took place last month and will look to better their performance in the upcoming match.
Club America looked like the better side in both halves as they enjoyed the major chunk of possession. However, the hosts produced only three shots on target, including the goal converted from the spot by their new recruit Julian Quinones in the 65th minute.
Leon, meanwhile, took the lead through Federico Vinas in the 58th minute. The fixture turned out to be intense in the dying minutes with both clubs trying to push for all three points. The hosts went a man down in injury time as Kevin Alvarez was sent off.
Guadalajara will play their first away fixture, since August 27. The visitors will have their task cut out against a formidable opponent. In their last away fixture, Guadalajara lost 1-2 to Santos Laguna.
Argentine midfielder Juan Brunetta scored the opener in the 52nd minute for the hosts while the lead was doubled by Colombia’s Duvan Vergara in the 72nd. Forward Roberto Alvarado netted the lone goal for Guadalajara from the spot in the 84th minute before they went a man down after Alexis Vega was sent off in injury time.
Previous Meetings
This derby will be quite special for the two clubs and their spectators because it will be the 250th El Super Clasico. In the previous 249 meetings, Club America emerged victorious on 92 occasions, while Chivas Guadalajara have 78 wins. The remaining 79 derbies have ended in draws.
The two sides locked horns in the 2023 Clausura playoffs. Club America had the advantage as they nabbed a narrow 1-0 win in Chivas Guadalajara’s backyard. However, Chivas struck back in the second leg to clinch a 3-1 win and advance to the final.
In the league phase, Club America have been dominant over the last 11 games. The 13-time Liga MX champions have won seven out of those 11 games and drawn four, leaving their arch-rivals with no wins. The last Chivas victory in this derby came in the 2017 Clausura.
Club America Eager to Overcome Leagues Cup Heartbreak
Club America entered the League Cup as one of the favorites to win. The Mexican giants defeated Columbus 1-0 in the Round of 32 to advance to the Round of 16 stage. In the Round of 16, Club America secured a 2-2 draw against Nashville in regulation time.
But lost 5-6 in penalties to the American club. However, since returning to the domestic league, the club has secured only one win in three matches and will be eager to display their dominance in the upcoming fixture.
Club America Eager to Extend Unbeaten Run
The hosts will be high on confidence as they are on a six-match unbeaten run. Club America has not lost a single match in the Liga MX Apertura since July. The period has overseen the club registering a thumping 3-0 win over Puebla while registering slender wins against Necaxa (3-2) and Cruz Azul (3-2).
The Andre Jardine-managed club has also registered two draws. However, it will be important for the club to maintain their composure against Guadalajara as stats will only be numbers in the derby fixture, where both clubs will look to put their best foot forward.
Rodriguez-Quinones Key for Jardine
Brazilian head coach Jardine has taken no time to settle into his new coaching role in Mexico. Adaptability has been an important factor in his coaching career which has spanned two decades. He has primarily opted to feature the 4-2-3-1 formation with Club America.
Club America has frequently rotated the position of players and taken the aid of fast-paced short-passing in this formation. One of the key factors to Jardine’s formation is that the center-forward drops to form a central diamond formation. The club has defensively taken an aggressive route under Jardine and displayed their intensity.
Quinones has netted four times in five appearances in his first season for the club and will be a key figure in the upcoming fixture alongside his Uruguayan compatriot Brian Rodriguez.
Chivas Guadalajara’s Poor Show in Leagues Cup
Guadalajara had a Leagues Cup to forget as they failed to secure a single win and were knocked out in the Group Stage. The club was drawn with Cincinnati and Sporting KC in the Group F.
The Mexican outfit began their campaign in the group stage with a humiliating 1-3 loss to Cincinnati. Brandon Vazques (2’,8’,73’) completed a sublime hat-trick in the second half to help Cincinnati secure a clinical victory while Antonio Briseono (61’) scored the lone goal for Guadalajara. The Mexican side had their task cut out in the added time of half-time as their defender Gilberto Sepulveda was sent off.
In their second group-stage fixture, the Mexican outfit lost 0-1 to Sporting KC. Guadalajara were outplayed as their American counterparts controlled the match throughout the regulation time. Sporting KC netted the lone goal through Johnny Russell in the 27th minute to clinch all three points from the fixture.
Guadalajara Look to Snap Losing Streak
There are plenty of problems to address for Guadalajara after their return to the domestic league. Their most prominent problem has been in front of the goals as the club has failed to find an equalizer or winner in the last two outings.
The Mexican outfit returned to the domestic league to secure a 1-1 draw against Juarez and then beat Club Tijuana 1-0 at home. However, their downward slope began with their loss of 1-2 against Santos Laguna and was extended with the 1-2 loss to Monterrey.
It is more likely that the Veljko Paunovic-managed side will extend their losing streak against Club America in the much-awaited derby.
Cristian Calderon to Play Key Role
Mexican left-back Cristian Calderon has played an influential role in the Guadalajara set-up in the season and will look to make his presence felt in the upcoming fixture. He has already assisted thrice in five appearances for the club.
The visitors will expect their midfielder Fernando Beltran and forward Alvardo to bring their scoring boots to the match. Beltran has netted twice in seven appearances while Alvardo has scored two goals in four matches.
Guadalajara has displayed a never-say-die spirit in 2023 and will bank on it in the upcoming fixture. The club has lost the lead on plenty of occasions this season but came from behind to secure a win.
