After losing against CF Monterrey in the middle of September, Club Leon have played four games in the league. They have won three and drawn one of those four, with wins against Tijuana, Santos Laguna, and Toluca. The solitary draw came against Queretaro FC.
In mid-September, Atlas FC were in fine form as they beat defending champions Tigres UANL and FC Juarez in back-to-back games. However, that was followed up with three successive losses against Puebla, Chivas Guadalajara, and Mazatlan FC.
As the business end of the season is approaching rapidly, there is no room for error. Atlas FC need a positive result to propel themselves back into the playoff qualification spots. However, Club Leon’s recent form has undoubtedly spruced up their spirits, and that winning momentum is expected to guide them to another victory on Tuesday.
This will be the 24th Liga MX encounter between the two clubs. Club Leon dominate the head-to-head record, as they have won 14 matches, leaving Atlas FC with just five wins. The remaining four games ended in a stalemate.
Victor Davila scored the only goal of the match in the 18th minute when these two sides last met in the 2023 Clausura season at the Estadio Jalisco. In the 2022 Apertura season, the hosts nabbed a thrilling 4-2 win over Atlas FC in a dramatic showdown at Estadio Leon.
Club Leon’s playground has not been a happy hunting ground for Atlas FC. The current CONCACAF Champions League holders have hosted the three-time Liga MX champions on 12 occasions. Atlas have only won once, which came during the 2017 Apertura campaign.
As things stand, Club Leon are eighth on the table, just three points off fourth-placed Pumas UNAM, with a game in hand. Expectations are high from the eight-time Liga MX champions this season after the team lifted their maiden Champions League earlier this year.
Coach Nicolas Larcamon’s men struggled in the opening stages of the current Apertura season, but the form has stabilized over the last seven games, during which Club Leon only lost once. Consistency will be key for the hosts as their objective will be to finish the league phase well.
Club Leon started the season with just one clean sheet in the first eight games. But now, the Champions League holders have turned their poor form around.
The hosts have kept three clean sheets in their last four games. Two of these shutouts came at home – a place where Club Leon have not conceded a goal since August.
The current Apertura season started with a 2-1 home defeat for Club Leon against Chivas Guadalajara after Jonathan Padilla nabbed a late winner.
However, the hosts have not lost any league games at Estadio Leon after that. They have played six league games at home, winning four, drawing one, and losing one.
Atlas FC are coming into this game on the back of a three-game losing streak. They have conceded ten goals in the last three games, damaging their goal difference and dropping them out of the playoff qualification zone.
The positive news for the visitors is that even if they lose against Club Leon, none of their final four fixtures are against title competitors, and their drive for playoff qualification could help them pick up a few crucial points, propelling them back into the desired zone.
In the match against Chivas Guadalajara earlier this month, Brian Lozano suffered an injury just 13 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute.
The winger has been ruled out for the season, dealing a massive blow to Atlas FC. The Uruguayan provided two assists in six appearances for the club this season.
In July this year, Atlas FC secured the loan signing of Juan Zapata from Colombian side Envigado. The 23-year-old has been quite impressive in the midfield so far.
In 11 appearances, Zapata has scored four goals. He scored Atlas FC’s only goal against Mazatlan FC in the last match and is now the club’s joint-top scorer with striker Jordy Caicedo, who is also on loan at Atlas FC from Tigres UANL.
