Three of the last five meetings between Toluca and CD Guadalajara have ended in a draw., Both sides have one win each in those meetings, and the games are tightly contested from start to end.
When the two sides met in the Clausura earlier this year, Carlos Cisneros got sent off for Guadalajara in the 24th minute. But still, they managed to take the lead in the 68th minute via José Macías, who had just been introduced in the game.
Toluca were fighting to get back in the game, but had to wait until the 96th minute to equalize. Leonardo Fernández scored with the last kick of the match to seal a dramatic draw.
Interestingly, the last time both sides got their wins in this fixture was in Apertura. Clausura matches usually end in draws, while the Apertura matches have seen results in recent meetings.
In the 2020 edition of Apertura, Toluca managed to get their win over Guadalajara. Diego González Hernández scored the lone goal of the match at the hour mark, and that was enough for them to seal the three points. Both sides had five shots on target, while it was Guadalajara who missed two big chances in the game.
In the 2021 edition, Guadalajara defeated Toluca 2-0, with both goals coming in stoppage time of either half. Cesar Huerta scored the opening goal in the first half stoppage time, while Ronaldo Cisneros scored a minute after he was sent on in the 95th minute.
The last time a match in the Apertura between these two sides ended in a draw was back in 2018. Alexis Vega opened the scoring for Toluca in the 4th minute but goals from Angel Zaldívar minutes before and after halftime saw Guadalajara take the lead. Luis Mendoza scored the equalizer in the 69th minute, and the game ended 2-2. Alfredo Talavera was sent off in the 77th minute for Toluca, while Guadalajara were reduced to 10 men in the 93rd minute when Orbelín Pineda was given the marching orders.
Toluca missed out on the playoff places in Clausura earlier this year. They finished 15th with 19 points in the season, while they needed at least 21 to qualify as Mazatlan occupied the final spot with those numbers.
They were keen on making it to the playoffs in Apertura this season, and made a brilliant start. Their season kick-started with a 3-1 win at Club Necaxa, while a 3-2 win at home to Atlas followed.
However, they could not make it a hat-trick of wins as Club America edged out a 1-0 win. Richard Sánchez scored the lone goal of the match deep into stoppage time and gave Toluca no chance of making a comeback.
They bounced back well and managed to get the win in the next match. Against Santos Laguna, Leonardo Fernández and Jordan Sierra scored to hand Toluca a 2-0 lead in the first half. Hugo Rodríguez scored in the 75th minute to start a comeback, but they could not get another goal.
They followed it up with a 1-0 win over Club Leon, thanks to Daniel Álvarez scoring in the 90th minute of the match. The home side were down to 10 men for the majority of the second half after Fidel Ambríz was sent off in the 52nd minute and Toluca took full advantage.
1-1 draws with Juarez FC and Puebla followed for Toluca, before they got back to winning ways. A 3-1 win over Club Tijuana reignited their confidence to make it to the top 4 this season, and the fight to win 3-2 at Cruz Azul with Camilo Sanvezzo scoring in the 98th minute made it stronger.
However, since then they have been winless in three matches and two of them have ended in defeats. Current league leaders Monterrey held them to a 1-1 draw, before Atletico de San Luis sneaked a 1-0 win with Jhon Murillo scoring the lone goal.
Toluca were keen to bounce back from the loss, but Pachuca made things worse. The home side were handed a 4-1 defeat with Sebastián Saucedo getting sent off in the final minute.
Sebastián Saucedo is suspended, while all other players are available.
Guadalajara made one of the worst starts to Apertura this season. They were winless after 8 matches, but have now notched three wins in a row and are already 7th in the league table.
They started the season with a goalless draw at home to Juarez FC, and were then handed a defeat in the second match by Atletico de San Luis. They were held to draws by Santos Laguna and Club Leon in the following games before they took off to face Juventus in a friendly.
The Italian side defeated them 2-0, and they could not get the confidence-boosting performance they were looking for. Draws against Queretaro and Pachuca followed for Guadalajara before another friendly defeat, this time to LA Galaxy.
Their form was already poor, and the friendly matches proved to be a big distraction for them. Mazatlan made the most of their poor form and handed Guadalajara their second loss of the season. The 2-1 defeat saw them still searching for a win and that search was not called off after the match against Atlas. Carlos Cisneros helped them get a draw -12 minutes after coming on as a substitute in the second half – but couldn’t inspire them to a win.
Their winless run finally came to an end when they defeated Club Necaxa away from home. Angel Zaldívar scored a brace while Roberto Alvarado and Fernando Beltran added two more goals to help them seal a comfortable win with two goals in each half.
Guadalajara went on to stun league leaders Monterrey in the match by edging out a 1-0 win. Santiago Ormeño scored the winner 9 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute and helped his side get back-to-back wins.
Pumas UNAM were ready to hand Guadalajara a wakeup call and took the lead in the 3rd minute via Diogo. However, Jesús Orozco and Alexis Vega scored twice in the first half and were helped with a third by Gil Alcalá’s own goal before halftime. The 3-1 lead remained intact in the second half as both sides failed to score and they made it three wins in three.
