Puerto Rico enters the Olympics as one of the biggest underdogs to win gold. They are tied with South Sudan and Japan with the longest odds to win gold at the tournament – at the bottom of their respective groups.
Occupying Group C, Puerto Rico will compete with the United States, Serbia, and South Sudan. While Puerto Rico qualified for the Olympics via an inspired homecourt performance during the San Juan qualifiers, they project to be one of the weakest members of Group C.
Realistically, gold is out of Puerto Rico's reach. The nation has thrived on its underdog position at the Olympics in the past. However, escaping the Group Stage is unlikely, and a potential match against one of the top seeds in the Quarterfinals is even less promising.

Puerto Rico has been a long-standing FIBA competitor, participating in nine Olympics and 12 FIBA Basketball World Cups. Despite its activity, Puerto Rico has never medaled at the Olympics.
While they've never climbed the Olympic podium, Puerto Rico has proven itself in the Americas. Puerto Rico earned five gold medals between the FIBA AmeriCup and the Pan American Games.
Puerto Rico qualified for its first Olympics in 1960 in Rome. In their Olympic basketball debut, Puerto Rico went 0-3 and finished 13th. They followed that up with its best all-time performance at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, going 5-4 and finishing fourth. Puerto Rico qualified for eight of the 12 Olympic games between 1960 and 2004 but failed to qualify after 2004. It took 20 years for them to return to the Olympics at the upcoming Paris Games.
Los Gallos, as they're also known, have a long tradition of fielding excellent point guards. NBA guard Jose Alvarado currently leads them, but they've also been led by NBA Champion JJ Barea and Carlos Arroyo, who captained Puerto Rico to their most significant basketball victory over the United States in 2004. Going into the 2024 Paris Olympics, Puerto Rico hopes to continue their history as an overachieving underdog.
