The Indiana Fever will close out the regular season on the road in our nation’s capital with a game vs. the Washington Mystics. It is a must-win game for the Mystics, who are slight home favorite to the Fever with a spot in the playoffs potentially on the line.
All three previous games between the Fever and Mystics were competitive. If the betting line is any indication, this game will game should be more of the same.
Indiana has already locked down the No. 6 seed in the playoffs. Does that mean there’s nothing to play for? Absolutely not! With a win, the Fever can secure the franchise’s first winning record since 2015 (20-14). Something worth playing for? Probably.
However, there is something to be said for a team that is in a must-win situation to even have a shot at the No. 8 seed. But they’ll also need the Atlanta Dream to lose to the Liberty in New York, where the Liberty have lost just three games this season.
But if New York decides to rest players…
Here’s the betting line for tonight’s Fever vs. Mystics game:

This game could do more than secure a winning record for the Fever or keep Washington’s playoff hopes alive. It will give the winner the lead in the all-time series, which is currently tied at 41-41. Indiana leads the season series, 2-1, but the Mystics are 2-1 against the spread.
The OVER is on a six-game winning streak and 7-3 in the last ten games between them.
20-19 SU, 21-18 ATS
OVER: 25-14
On the Road: 8-11 SU 10-9 ATS
Any concerns over whether the Fever could pick up where they left off were quickly put to rest once play resumed after the Olympics. They won seven of their first eight, improving to 18-16. The offense had become one of the best in the league, scoring 91.4 points per game.
But as they head into the regular season finale, they do not have that momentum going for them anymore. Before their 110-109 win over Dallas in their regular-season finale, the Fever had lost three of their last four. To be fair, two losses were to the Aces and the other to the Lynx.
The win over the Wings got them back on the right side of the scoreboard. While they do not need a win tonight, it would give them momentum heading into a tough series vs. the Sun or Aces.
Washington has struggled to score points all season, averaging 79 points per game all year and 79,2 since the break. Playing Indiana’s 11th-ranked defense could be just what they need. The Fever will, of course, combat that advantage the only way they know how—by outscoring them.
Caitlin Clark has done some of her best work vs. the Mystics, with 25.7 points per game, 8.3 assists, and 8.3 rebounds. She’s shot 50% from behind the arc against Washington (14-28). However, the last time the Fever and Mystics played was July 10.
Since then, she’s averaged 23.6 points per game, and Kelsey Mitchell has averaged 24.1, giving Indiana two of the top three scorers in the league.

Washington is in a unique position heading into this game. With a win and an Atlanta loss to the Liberty in New York, they can become the first team in WNBA history to lose their first 12 games of the season and still qualify for the postseason.
New York should crush Atlanta, and the Mystics and Fever have played some competitive games this season. If Indiana decides rest is more important than a winning record…
However, should Washington want to win? Yes, making the playoffs is one of the goals every team has when the season starts. But they face the New York Liberty in the first round, a team that beat them four times this season by an average score of 88.8 to 79.5.
Any team can win on any given day. But would it be better for the franchise not to make the postseason so they’ll have a better shot at drafting Paige Bueckers next year(next year’s Caitlin Clark)?

Don’t count on the Mystics to tank in an effort to improve their draft position;. They’d still need to win the lottery, which they will not be guaranteed to do. They’ll bring their A game, but it will not be enough against the Fever. Their desire to finish the regular season with a winning record will push them over the edge.
