The Florida Gators came into the SEC Tournament looking to lock in their NCAA Tournament bid, and they have done just that. They were able to beat Georgia, blow out #19 Alabama, and overcome a massive deficit against Texas A&M. While they enter as an underdog in today's SEC Championship, it is a mistake to doubt this Gators team.
Florida's strength is its offense, which ranks third in the SEC with 85.7 PPG. Its four reliable scorers have led them to a total of 282 in three tournament games. The problem is its defense, which has allowed at least 80 points in each of those games. Its offense has been able to overcome it, but Auburn will be the best defense they have seen during their run.
The Tigers are one of the most balanced teams in the country. They won and finished in third place in the SEC standings but have the seventh-best point differential in the league (+15.1). They managed to hold off a hot Mississippi State team last night after demolishing #15 South Carolina by 31 points the night before.
These two teams met once this season, with Florida blowing them out at home on February 10. While that is a bad sign for today, we don't believe they will be able to replicate that success. One reason is that Auburn was ice cold from the field during the game, finishing with a 42.1 FG% and a 17.6 3P%. They also managed to make just 53.8% of their free throws.
We know Florida's defense is bad, and they have not shown improvement during this tournament run. Look for the Tigers to gain a solid lead early and never give it back.
