Chelsea off and Running in USA After Strong End to Season

Chelsea got off the mark at the Club World Cup with a 2-0 victory over LAFC. The MLS team did not disgrace themselves, but they were ultimately outclassed by Enzo Maresca’s men. It was another step in the right direction for the Blues.

Chelsea had a turbulent season in 2024/25, but they came good towards the end of the campaign. Maresca fulfilled his remit by taking the team into the top four of the Premier League and thus qualifying for the Champions League. Chelsea also lifted a trophy in the form of the Conference League.

They have their sights set on another piece of silverware this summer, with Chelsea seen as potential dark horses to go all the way in the USA. There is still a long way to go, but the Blues are certainly worth keeping a close eye on.

Flamengo One of South America’s Biggest Forces This Summer

Most soccer observers (including this writer) believe the Club World Cup winner will come from Europe. The old continent has such a financial advantage these days that it is hard for clubs from elsewhere to compete.

If there is to be a non-European champion this summer, it will probably be a Brazilian. The largest country in South America is increasingly dominant in continental competitions, with virtually everyone else unable to keep up. Of the four Brazilian teams present in the USA, Flamengo look like one of the strongest.

Filipe Luis’s side beat Esperance de Tunis 2-0 last time out and they are now ready to turn their attention towards Chelsea, a club the Flamengo manager used to play for.

This Game Could Be One of the Highlights of the Group Stage

This match has the potential to be one of the best of the group stage. All-European contests are not as intriguing as those that pit clubs from different continents against one another. And given Flamengo’s quality, this one feels more evenly matched than most alternative encounters.

Yet while Flamengo are capable of causing Chelsea a few problems, they will nevertheless struggle to emerge triumphant. The Blues are in good form and the fact of the matter is that virtually every member of their starting line-up would improve Flamengo’s XI.

A Flamengo win would probably be good for the tournament, which would ideally not be entirely dominated by Europe. But Chelsea are obvious favorites.
