Chelsea Two Victories Away From Winning Another Trophy
At times last season it looked like Enzo Maresca was in danger of being sacked as Chelsea manager. To be clear, there was never any indication that the board had lost faith in the Italian, but Maresca struggled to win over the fan base and results were inconsistent at best. Fast forward to July and the former Leicester City head coach is suddenly sitting a lot more comfortably.
After guiding Chelsea to a fourth-place finish in the Champions League, Maresca led the Londoners to Conference League glory at the end of May. He is now seeking another trophy in the form of the Club World Cup, which Chelsea are now third-favorites to win.
It must be acknowledged that a relatively kind draw has helped the Blues get this far. In the first two knockout rounds they faced Benfica and Palmeiras - decent sides, but not world-beaters. Yet none of that will matter if Chelsea go on to triumph in the USA.
Fluminense the Only Team Still Competing From Outside Europe
For the expanded Club World Cup to be deemed a success, it needed a balance between two extremes. On the one hand, a semi-finalist grouping of four European powerhouses would make it too difficult to distinguish from the Champions League.
On the other hand, a situation with three underdog semi-finalists from other regions of the globe would suggest that the European clubs were not overly bothered about the competition. The last four would also lack star quality.
Fluminense are flying the flag for Brazil and their presence in the last four as the sole non-European competitor will please FIFA. Like Chelsea, they have arguably benefitted from a kind draw, but you can only beat what is in front of you and Fluminense deserve credit for having done that.
Chelsea Will Have to Work Hard to Get Past Fluminense
Maresca, for one, is not underestimating Fluminense. The Chelsea boss knows his team must be ready for the challenge their opponents will pose.
“I watched some games that they have played, and you can see that they are very well organised. They have some very good players, and the manager is doing a fantastic job,” the Italian said ahead of the semis.
We believe Chelsea will ultimately come out on top, but they will not have everything their own way. Back a draw at half-time in the first semi-final.
