LAFC Target Victory in Crucial Match Against Esperance de Tunis

LAFC went down 2-0 to Chelsea on matchday one of the Club World Cup group stage. Any defeat is disappointing, but there is no need for Steve Cherundolo’s charges to feel too down about their performance in their opening encounter.

LAFC were the last team to qualify for this tournament, having beaten Mexican outfit America in a play-in match on May 31. They did not have much time to prepare for the competition, but a win here would keep their hopes of a last-16 berth alive.

Anything less than that would leave the MLS team in a difficult position going into the final round of group games.

Tunisian Team Are up Against It but Not Out of the Race Yet

Esperance de Tunis were also second best in their first game of the tournament, as Flamengo beat them 2-0 in Philadelphia. It was always going to be tough for Esperance to reach the knockout phase and that loss has made things even harder.

Yet just like LAFC, a win on Friday would keep them in contention. With Chelsea their opponents on matchday three, a draw or a defeat here would leave them on the brink of elimination.

For a club like Esperance, simply being here is an achievement worthy of celebration. Yet that does not mean they will be anything less than fiercely competitive on Friday. Expect Esperance to push LAFC all the way.

Winner of This Match Will Remain in Contention for Last 16

With defeat unthinkable for both sides, this could be a scrappy game. It would be a surprise if there were a huge number of goals at Geodis Park in Nashville.

In our view, LAFC will edge it. This game is not taking place in Los Angeles, but the MLS team still has home advantage compared to their opponents from North Africa. They also have more offensive quality at their disposal.

Esperance will fight hard and be as resilient as possible, but they may well struggle in attacking areas. That gives LAFC a golden chance to pick up maximum points.
