Lionel Messi’s exit from Barcelona has thrown the top scorer race wide open. The Argentine was the heavy favorite to once again score more goals than any other player in 2021/22, but his move to Paris Saint-Germain will give other candidates a chance to get the top spot.

If Messi does depart, Sergio Aguero, Antoine Griezmann and Memphis Depay should all have more opportunities to score goals. But it is still unclear how Barcelona will fit their various pieces together, and Aguero and Depay have not even been registered yet due to the club’s financial woes.

Luis Suarez’s goals fired Atletico Madrid to the title last term, and he will be hoping to do something similar this year. Karim Benzema is probably the best bet, though. It remains to be seen whether Suarez, who turns 35 in January, will have the legs to maintain a high level throughout another full campaign. Benzema is only slightly younger but does not rely on his intensity in the same way Suarez does. The Frenchman will be the focal point for a Madrid team that should score plenty.

Who is the Top Scorer La Liga 2020/21?

Lionel Messi was the top scorer in the 2020/21 La Liga campaign. He found the back of the net 30 times in 35 appearances in the Spanish top flight and finished seven goals clear of Karim Benzema and Gerardo Moreno in joint-second place.

Who is the All-Time La Liga Top Scorer?

Player and Clubs Goals
Lionel Messi (Barcelona) 474
Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) 311
Telmo Zarra (Athletic Bilbao) 251
Hugo Sanchez (Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid) 234
Raul (Real Madrid) 228
Alfredo Di Stefano (Real Madrid, Espanyol) 227
Cesar Rodriguez (Granada, Barcelona, Elche) 223
Quini (Sporting Gijon, Barcelona) 219
Pahino (Celta Vigo, Real Madrid, Deportivo La Coruna) 210
Edmundo Suarez (Valencia, Alcoyano) 195

Lionel Messi is already the leading scorer in La Liga history, and he still has time to add significantly more goals to his tally. The Argentina international will expect to break the 500-goal barrier in the 2021/22 season, which would see him open up an even larger lead at the top of the all-time charts.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the player with whom Messi shared a professional rivalry during the former’s time at Real Madrid, is second in the standings with 311 goals. Only two of the top 10 – Telmo Zarra and Edmundo Suarez – did not play for either Madrid or Barcelona.

Who Has Finished as La Liga Top Scorer Most?

Lionel Messi has finished as La Liga’s top scorer on a record on eight occasions. He did so for the first time in 2009/10, and also found the net more often than any other player in the division in 2011/12 and 2012/13. In the first of those seasons, he scored a record 50 goals in a La Liga campaign. Messi has also finished as the league’s top scorer in each of the last five years.

Telmo Zarra is second on the list, having finished as La Liga’s top scorer six times. Alfredo Di Stefano, Quini, and Hugo Sanchez are joint-third with five apiece, followed by Ferenc Puskas on four.

When Is the La Liga Top Scorer Announced?

The La Liga top scorer is simply the player who has scored the most goals over the course of the season. The winner is only confirmed after each team has played all 38 of its games, although the top scorer can often be predicted a few matches before the end of the season if the player in first place has built up a sizable lead. Nothing is official, though, until the campaign has been completed.

What Does the La Liga Top Scorer Receive?

The La Liga top scorer is awarded the Trofeo Pichichi by Marca, one of the most popular sports newspapers in Spain. The prize is named after Rafael Moreno Aranzadi, the former Athletic Bilbao striker who was better known by his nickname, Pichichi.

Pichichi played for Athletic between 1911 and 1922, before La Liga had begun. The natural-born goalscorer was one of the stars of Spanish soccer in the second decade of the 20th century, but his life was tragically cut short when he died of typhus aged just 29. Pichichi had the top scorer award named after him in 1953.
