San Luis will look to regroup for the key fixture after registering a 0-2 loss to Santos Laguna in their last league phase match at home. The hosts controlled 70 percent of the possession in the match but struggled to convert their shots on target into goals. Santos Laguna sealed victory through goals from Felix Torres (10’) and Pedro Sanchez (12’).
Club Leon will be confident about the much-anticipated match after clinching a 2-1 victory over a 9-man Juarez in their last fixture. Borja Sanchez (38’) and Federico Vinas (44’) completed the comeback for Club Leon after Aitar Garcia (18’) opened the scoring early for Juarez. Leon maintained most of the possession in the match and looked clinical in the final third. Juarez went a man down in the 70th minute after Sebastian Saucedo (70’) was sent off while they were reduced to nine in injury time following a red card to Alfredo Talavera.
San Luis will be the favorites to win the contest and become the seventh seed in the Liga MX Apertura 2023 playoffs. However, both teams will be keen to put their best foot forward in the playoffs to bag a positive result.
San Luis and Club Leon have faced off 14 times in Liga MX since their first meeting in 2012. Club Leon holds the upper hand with eight wins, while San Luis has won four, and two matches ended in a draw.
In their previous meeting, hosts San Luis blanked Club Leon 3-0 in the Liga MX Apertura contest. San Luis controlled 55 percent of the possession in the match, with Rodrigo Dourado (38’), Leo Bonatini (47’), and Jhon Murillo (53’) netting one goal each. Incidentally, San Luis broke the deadlock minutes after Club Leon’s Lucas Romero was sent off with a red card in the 36th minute.
San Luis has recorded two wins and three losses in their last five appearances, while Club Leon has three losses, one draw, and a win away from home.
San Luis will be eager to bounce back to winning ways at home. The club registered their last win at home against ten-man Necaxa on October 23.
Since then, the club has registered a 0-1 loss to Club America and a 0-2 loss to Santos Laguna. The club has not scored a single goal in their last two home fixtures and will be looking to regroup to find the back of the net in the playoffs.
Hosts San Luis will miss out on the services of their crucial midfielder Andres Iniestra. He will likely remain out of action for San Luis in the playoffs.
The Mexican had appeared in four matches for San Luis in the Liga MX Apertura before sustaining a meniscus injury earlier this month. The 27-year-old is expected to be available for selection in January 2024.
Brazilian attacker Vitingo and his Spanis compatriot Unai Bilbao will be critical for the hosts in front of the goals.
Vitingo has netted seven times in as many appearances in 2023-24, while the Spanish defender has scored five times.
Club Leon will be eager to improve their record away from home. In the crucial stage of the Apertura 2023, Club Leon will be eyeing their first win away from home since October 9, when they registered a 2-0 victory over Santos Laguna.
Since then, Leon has registered a 0-1 loss to Cruz Azul and a 4-5 defeat to Puebla. However, the silver lining for the club is that they have scored plenty of goals away from home and will be eager to clinch all three points.
The visitors will likely be without the services of center-back Jaine Barreiro and left-back Pedro Hernandez in their first playoff fixture.
Barreiro has netted one goal and one assist in seven appearances before being sidelined due to an injury in September. Hernandez, who will still feature in the Liga MX Apertura this season, remains doubtful for the clash.
The visitors will hope for their terrific attacking trio, Federico Vinas, Nicolas Lopez, and Angel Mena, to bring their goal-scoring boots to the match.
Vinas is the leading goal scorer for the team, with six goals to his name, while Lopez and Mena have chipped in with three goals each.
