CD Guadalajara have won two, drawn one, and lost one of their four games so far this season. Their campaign was up and running with a narrow win against Monterrey after which they were held to a goalless draw by Atletico de San Luis and lost against Deportivo Toluca. In the last match, CD Guadalajara bounced back with a 2-1 win against FC Juarez.
Queretaro FC are winless in the three games they have played so far. They held Club America to a goalless draw in the opener before losing against Puebla. Their last match ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Atlas FC.
The head-to-head record is evenly balanced. It looks like Queretaro FC’s winless run will be extended, but they will pick up a point after holding CD Guadalajara to a draw when they meet this weekend.
In Liga MX, the two sides have locked horns on 26 occasions. Both sides have won seven games each, and 12 encounters have ended in draws. In the Apertura season, Ernesto Vega’s 81st-minute penalty was canceled out by Mario Osuna’s 90th-minute spot-kick as both sides shared the spoils after a 2-2 draw.
Vega was on the scoresheet for CD Guadalajara in the corresponding fixture last year as well when the two sides settled for a point after a 1-1 draw in the Clausura 2022 season. In the last five Liga MX encounters between the two sides, four games have ended in a draw and Queretaro FC have won once.
In the last five Liga MX encounters between these two sides at the Estadio ARKON, CD Guadalajara have only won once and the remaining four matches have ended in draws. CD Guadalajara’s last win at home against Queretaro FC came in Apertura 2019.
CD Guadalajara are the second most successful team in Liga MX after Club America. Despite being just one title behind the Aguilas, CD Guadalajara’s aim this season will be to qualify for playoffs.
This change in approach has come after the side have failed to win a single title since Clausura 2017. CD Guadalajara have dropped winnable points quite frequently in the last few seasons and their attack has not been clinical enough to finish games off.
If the 12-time Liga MX champions want something from their next game against Queretaro FC, their attackers will have to be potent in front of the goal. Efforts will have to be doubled as they face a side against whom they have almost always dropped points in the recent past.
In addition to the issues in attack, the injury list at CD Guadalajara is getting longer and we are just four games into the new season. Midfielder Sergio Flores has a slight niggle on his knee and is doubtful ahead of the next game.
Antonio Briseno is recovering from a thigh injury and will be out till March, while Jose Macias has been out with an ACL injury since June last year. The biggest blow for CD Guadalajara comes in the form of an ACL injury to Alexis Vega.
Vega, who has scored in CD Guadalajara’s last two games against Queretaro FC will miss not only the next match but also remain on the sidelines till October 2023.
Angel Zaldivar finished as the club’s top scorer in the Apertura season with four goals. CD Guadalajara agreed to a loan deal that saw Zaldivar move to Atletico de San Luis till the end of this year after seeing Alexis Vega play well up front.
However, after the injury to Vega and the loan move of Zaldivar, the goalscoring onus is now on Ronaldo Cisneros. So far, the striker has failed to score in four appearances. In the last match, he was flanked by Roberto Alvarado and new signing Victor Guzman.
More creativity and even goals will be expected from Alvarado and Guzman too. Carlos Cisneros is likely to operate in midfield to add more creativity. The full-back has already added one goal to his tally.
Queretaro FC finished at the bottom of the table in the Apertura 2022 season. They only managed to win one out of 17 games all season as they finished with a total points tally of just nine points, six of which came from draws.
After drawing their last match against Atlas FC, Queretaro FC’s winless streak in Liga MX was extended to ten games. Their last win came in August 2021 when they shocked Tijuana 2-0. That win ended Queretaro FC’s 14-game winless streak.
This time around, Queretaro FC will be hoping to end this unwanted record against a vulnerable CD Guadalajara side. However, despite the chaos at CD Guadalajara, Queretaro FC may still lack the firepower to scrape past them.
Queretaro FC roped in Jose Zuniga from Dorados this January to replace Ariel Nahuelpan, who joined Mazatlan FC. Nahuelpan was the joint-top scorer for Queretaro FC with four goals last season.
Zuniga is now partnering Angel Sepulveda up front but still has not found his stride at the new club. The Colombian is yet to get off the mark after making three appearances for the club. Sepulveda is off the mark with Ettson Ayon and Rodrigo Lopez also contributing.
Jonathan Torres and Jose Maduena have chipped in with an assist each as Queretaro FC await their first victory of the season, which could come in the very next game if Zuniga and Sepulveda find the rhythm that they so desperately need.
Queretaro FC were busy in the transfer market before the Clausura season kicked off. They added a player in every part of the field this January. Between the sticks, Gil Alcala has already taken charge in all games so far.
Ahead of him, his former teammate Miguel Barbieri has joined Queretaro FC on loan from Tijuana. Manuel Duarte has come into the midfield and made two appearances while Jonathan Torres has clinched an assist after two appearances for his new club.
Queretaro FC have no injury issues to worry about and with a full-strength squad at his disposal, coach Mauro Gerk can actually cause an upset against CD Guadalajara. At this stage, even a point would do for them.
