Toluca vs CF Monterrey Prediction

Toluca vs CF Monterrey Predictions

During the 2022-23 Liga MX campaign, Toluca finished sixth in the Apertura league phase and fourth in the Clausura league phase. Entering the playoffs in both phases, the club could not go all the way and clinch their 11th league title and the first one since 2010.

Over the years, as the duration of the trophy drought extends, the frustration levels of the fans and players are on the rise. However, the latest Apertura campaign has also commenced with a shaky approach from Toluca, as they are dangling in 12th place after five games.

CF Monterrey are in the same boat as Toluca. However, their trophy drought was not as severe as Toluca’s. The club’s last Liga MX title-winning campaign came in the 2019 Apertura season. That same year, they won the CONCACAF Champions League and then went on to win the same title for the fifth time in 2021. As things stand, CF Monterrey are not in their best form and are ranked eighth after winning two out of four games played so far. The latest setback came in the last match when they lost at home to Cruz Azul.

This will be a tightly contested fixture because both sides want to climb up towards the top of the table and qualify for the playoffs comfortably. Hence, both teams will fight for three points but may have to settle for one at the end of the game, as the probability of a draw is quite high.

Previous Meetings

There is a lot of history between the two teams in Liga MX. Since 2010, the two clubs have clashed 28 times in all competitions. CF Monterrey have a slightly better record after winning 11 of those encounters. While Toluca have won eight times, and nine games have ended in draws.

In the Clausura season, an Arturo Gonzalez brace in the first half helped CF Monterrey clinch a crucial 2-1 win against Toluca. In the second half, Maximiliano Araujo pulled one back for the visitors, but they could not score another one.

CF Monterrey have dodged defeat against Toluca in three of the previous five visits to the Estadio Nemesio Diez. The five-time champions returned with a point in their last two visits and won the 2021 Clausura encounter to clinch all three points.

Before that, the Estadio Nemesio Diez was a fortress for Toluca. However, recently, the club has been struggling to get the desired results at the venue. Hosting CF Monterrey during such a run will be a massive challenge for Toluca. However, considering the form the visitors are in, a draw is the most likely outcome.

Toluca Will Itching to End a Frustrating Run

Ten days after a shocking loss against underdogs Minnesota United in the 2023 Leagues Cup Round of 16, Toluca resumed their Apertura 2024 season with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Pumas UNAM.

The ten-time Liga MX champions were up against Atlas FC a week later. Yet again, the points were shared after the full-time whistle after both clubs fired a blank. That result extended Toluca’s winless run in the Apertura campaign to three games.

Before the break, Toluca lost in their own backyard against FC Juarez. That loss came after Toluca started the season with a draw and a win. Hence, the lack of wins is causing a rise in frustration levels at the club.

The Team Must Stop Allowing a Lot of Room to the Opposition

Inconsistency can lead any club towards catastrophe, and Toluca are dealing with a similar problem this season. In the last two games, the club has been incredibly lucky to get a point because their opponents were dominating the game.

Against Pumas UNAM, Toluca attempted ten shots, while their counterparts fired 22 shots at goal and created eight big chances. Toluca could only create a couple of big chances themselves. A similar pattern was seen in the next match against Atlas. Toluca cannot afford to give such room to a prolific CF Monterrey side.

Perfect Occasion for the New Signing to Shine

Toluca signed Pedro Raul from Vasco da Gama towards the end of last month to bolster the club's attacking department. The Brazilian made his debut as a substitute against Pumas UNAM before making his first start against Atlas FC.

However, the 26-year-old has failed to make a goal contribution yet. If he gets off the mark soon, it will take a little weight off Juan Dominguez’s shoulder and finally give Toluca a striker who can score goals consistently.

The Slump May Continue for CF Monterrey

CF Monterrey started the new Apertura campaign on the front foot with a draw and two wins in their opening three games before the 2023 Leagues Cup. They continued to build on the momentum in the Leagues Cup and eventually finished fourth-best in the tournament.

However, since they lost in the semifinals of that competition, the five-time Liga MX champions have not recovered well. They lost the third-place match against Philadelphia Union and then marked the resumption of the Apertura season with a surprising loss against Cruz Azul.

Now, a series of tricky fixtures awaits CF Monterrey. After the game against Toluca, the club will visit Chivas Guadalajara. They will then take on Club Leon, and after that, they will play the Clásico Regiomontano against defending Clausura champions Tigres UANL.

Club Will Aim to Replicate Clausura Away Record

Teams are usually comfortable playing in their own backyard. However, CF Monterrey had an almost equally balanced record between home and away fixtures. They lost two out of nine games at home and lost just one out of eight games on the road.

This season, they have already lost at home but have managed to dodge defeat in two away matches. They won one against Mazatlan FC and drew the other against high-flyers Atletico de San Luis. They were quite prolific in the Leagues Cup as well and will hope to continue their positive away run in the upcoming games.

Injury-Plagued Squad Causing a Dilemma for the Coach

Key players missing important matches does not bode well for any team. CF Monterrey are struggling with the same issue, as five of their players are on the current injury list. Right-back Erick Aguirre is the latest name that has been added to that list.

Striker German Berterame is out till October due to a foot injury, while his strike partner Rodrigo Aguirre is out till mid-September with a calf problem. Meanwhile, Omar Govea has a hand injury that may rule the midfielder out of the next game.
