Kyle Larson Will Be Fast, As Usual, But Not Fast Enough to Win

Oddsmakers are consistently enthralled with Kyle Larson, and there’s ample reason for the love affair.

Larson is a generational talent who is fast everywhere he goes in a wide variety of vehicles. In his day job—the NASCAR Cup Series—Larson is the 2021 champion, and he’s tied for the series lead with three victories this season.

But Larson has never won at Pocono. In 16 starts at the track, he has recorded just five top fives, with a best result of second (twice), in 2018 with Chip Ganassi Racing and 2021 with Hendrick Motorsports.

We expect Larson to be strong on Sunday, but we also believe other drivers will be better. Hence, it’s our counsel to steer clear of the driver of the No. 5 Chevrolet at (+500) via BetMGM.

Michael McDowell Could Be a Surprise Top Performer on Sunday

Pay no attention to Michael McDowell’s record at Pocono Raceway.

The Front Row Motorsports cars have made a quantum leap in performance this season. Michael McDowell has led the charge in the No. 34 Ford, qualifying in the top 10 in half the NASCAR Cup Series’ 20 races this year.

We expect McDowell to have speed again this weekend. Since the introduction of NASCAR’s Gen 7 race car in 2022, McDowell has finished sixth and 19th at Pocono Raceway.

We like McDowell to qualify in the top 10 and finish in the top 10 at a very generous (+425) at BetMGM. We also think a top five at a whopping (+1800) at BetMGM is a reasonable long-shot proposition.

Denny Hamlin Is the Obvious Choice - Who Are We to Disagree?

Though he is tied with Kyle Larson, William Byron and Christopher Bell for the NASCAR Cup Series lead with three victories, Denny Hamlin has suffered through a miserable five-race stretch in recent weeks with four finishes outside the top 20 in that span.

Hamlin’s fortunes will change on Sunday when the series returns to Pocono Raceway, one of his favorite tracks.

In his rookie season in 2006, Hamlin won twice from the pole at the Tricky Triangle. All told, he owns seven victories at the 2.5-mile speedway, a track record.

Hamlin is the defending winner at Pocono, and we think he’ll add an eighth victory to his resume on Sunday at (+375) BetMGM. He’s the oddsmakers’ favorite - and should be.
