Boise State vs. Oregon Picks, Predictions, and Odds: Ducks to Live Up to Preseason Expectations

  • Oregon entered the year as one of the favorites to win the National Championship

  • The Ducks barely squeaked out the win against Idaho in their week one matchup

  • Boise State’s defense struggled with limiting opposing offensive production when in the red zone

After entering the year listed as one of the favorites to win the National Championship, the Oregon Ducks severely underwhelmed in their week one matchup against Idaho. Narrowly winning 24-14, the Ducks have created some cause for concern as their post-game metrics look lackluster for what a contender should be. Fortunately for us bettors, overreactions create betting value as Oregon is in a position to show why they are one of the best teams in the nation when they face off against the Boise State Broncos.

Boise State vs. Oregon My Pick

After edging out Idaho, Oregon enters week two as a -18 point favorite against a far tougher opponent in Boise State. While the Broncos offense is a formidable unit in their own right, generating rush production will be tough to come by against a Ducks front seven that is projected to be one of the better run stopping units in the nation. Factor in Oregon’s offense quietly ranking near the top of the board in most key metrics, and the Ducks should set a scoring pace too fast for Boise to keep up with.

Boise State vs. Oregon Predictions

Boise State Broncos

With the shocking announcement that star running back Ashton Jeanty would be making his return to the Broncos backfield, it was expected that Boise State would field one of the more explosive rush attacks in the nation. Jeanty seemingly picked up right where he left off, finishing week one’s contest against Georgia Southern with 267 rushing yards and 6 rushing touchdowns.

While a star talent in his own right, Jeanty will find himself struggling to generate consistent rush production as the Oregon Ducks defense looks to round back into form after a lackluster performance against Idaho. Projected to be one of the more stout run stopping units in the nation, it was eye opening to see their front seven struggle in week one as they finished the contest ranked 43rd in Def Rush Success Rate, 50th in Def Rush PPA, and 50th in Def Rush Explosiveness.

Even though a case can be made that it was another example of a far superior program sleepwalking against a lowly FCS team, Oregon can ill-afford to look flat against one of the best running backs in the nation. With expectations of Oregon’s defensive front rounding back into form, expect Boise State’s offensive line to collapse under pressure in the trenches which will limit the quality of Jeanty’s rushing lanes. With Jeanty bottled up, expect the Broncos offense to stall out and struggle to get into scoring position.

Oregon Ducks

While Oregon’s defense severely underwhelmed, their offense quietly played as one of the best units in the nation as they finished week one ranked top three in Off Success Rate, Finishing Drives, and Havoc Allowed. Their success stemmed from both areas of the offense as their ground game and pass attack ranked equally well in the same previously mentioned metrics.

Heading into their matchup against Boise, Oregon’s offense will be in a position to continue to succeed as Boise’s defensive struggles were on full display in their week one matchup against Georgia Southern. Entering the year, the Broncos defense was projected to struggle with limiting opposing offensive production and that was immediately apparent as they finished week one ranked 115th in Def Explosiveness and 92nd in Opposing Finishing Drives.

With an undersized front seven poised to get pushed around, as well as a secondary that struggles in coverage, Oregon’s offense should have no issue with moving the ball down the field and into scoring position at a consistent rate. Dillon Gabriel looked comfortable in his new offensive system, having no issue with trading Explosiveness for more efficient quick throws into opposing gaps in coverage. With an uptick in more potential Explosive plays, expect Gabriel to string together another dazzling performance as he shreds a weak Boise defense.
