Kicking off the first game of the night in the NHL is the Eastern Conference matchup between the Montreal Canadiens at the Columbus Blue Jackets. Both the Canadiens and the Blue Jackets are among the worst teams in the league on both sides of the ice. There are going to be opportunities for either team to score
The Canadiens have more reliable offensive playmakers than the Blue Jackets this season. Among the top players for Montreal is center Nick Suzuki, who is the team’s leading scorer (17). He is one of four players for the Canadiens who have accounted for a team-high six points.
Look for Suzuki to be a difference maker against a disappointing Blue Jackets.
The biggest match of the night is set for a huge Eastern Conference game between the Detroit Red Wings visiting the New York Rangers. The Red Wings are coming into this game with the fourth-ranked scoring offense in the league (3.7 goals per game) while the Rangers possess the third-ranked scoring defense (2.45 goals allowed per game).
The Red Wings are feeling good about their chances to take on one of the top-ranked defenses in the league as they have outscored their opponents 14-3 in their last three games. Forward Alex DeBrincat leads the team in goals accounted for this season (12) and he is second in points accounted for (20). He has accounted for a goal or an assist in five of the last six games.
The Rangers allowed four goals in the 7-4 win over the Boston Bruins and five goals in the 5-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres in their last two games.
The Los Angeles Kings shouldn't have a tough time keeping one of the worst offenses in the NHL in the Washington Capitals from scoring. On the other side of the ice, the Kings are taking on a Capitals team that is ranked eighth in the league in goals allowed per game (2.78). Luckily for the Kings, they are the top-ranked scoring offense in the league by averaging 4.0 goals per game.
Los Angeles possesses several key role players that have made a huge impact on the top offense in the league since the start of the season. One player that has been great this season is forward Kevin Fiala, who is the team’s leader in assists (14). He is tied with center Adrian Kempe in points accounted for this season (20).
If the Kings establish a rhythm early, there will be multiple scoring opportunities.
