In Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, the Vegas Golden Knights took care of business at home against the Florida Panthers. They will look to do the same in Game 2 by dealing another loss to a Panthers team that has been incredible on the road this postseason. But Florida will be aiming to even this series at one game apiece, as they aim to be the more disciplined team in the second game of this series.
The Florida Panthers dealt the first punch in the Stanley Cup Final against the Vegas Golden Knights, scoring first in the first period of Game 1. But they could not sustain the momentum from that initial goal, allowing Vegas to tie the game before the Knights ran away with things in the third period. If the Panthers want to win Game 2 and even this series before it heads to Florida, avoiding penalties will be a huge factor.
In Game 1, the Panthers racked up 46 penalty minutes, nearly three times the amount that Vegas did. That led to a power play goal in the first period for Vegas that tied the game at a goal apiece. In this contest, the Panthers will not be able to afford those kinds of mental mistakes, or they could be looking at a 2-0 deficit heading into Game 3 back in Florida later this week.
Also important for the Panthers will be the performance of goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, who was a disappointment in Game 1 of this series. Bobrovsky let in four goals, with the fifth Vegas goal coming against an empty net, as the Panthers netminder failed to save 90% of the shots that came his way in Saturday’s series opener. Bobrovsky absolutely must be better if the Panthers are going to stand a chance in this series.
On home ice, the Vegas Golden Knights were incredibly resilient in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. They came back from a goal down in the first period to take a 2-1 lead, then scored the final three goals of the game after Florida tied things at 2-2 in the second period. In Game 2, the Knights will look to build off of what they did down the stretch in the opening game of this series, as they look to take a daunting 2-0 series lead.
For Vegas, the offensive balance was such a huge part of what propelled them to their win in Game 1. Five different players scored a goal for the Golden Knights, with their ability to score from so many sources making them incredibly hard to defend. Another game featuring that kind of offensive diversity could be exactly what they need to go up by two games before this series goes to the Southeast.
Also impressive was the performance that Vegas got in goal from Adin Hill, who allowed just two goals and saved 94.3% of the shots that he was faced with. While all of the talk going into this series was about Bobrovsky in net, Hill turned out to be the star between the pipes in that contest. His performance in Game 2 will be one of many keys in determining whether we have a 2-0 or 1-1 series after Monday night.
