Puerto Rico vs. Spain - W

  • Location: Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Villeneuve d'Ascq, France

  • Game Time & Date: 5 a.m. ET on Wednesday, July 31

  • Coverage: Peacock, NBCOlympics.com

  • Point Spread: Spain -20.5 (odds via bet365)

From what we've seen of Puerto Rico, they are not a strong offensive or defensive team.

They only scored 55 vs. Serbia and averaged 59 ppg in their qualifying tournament. It is hard to say anything good about how Las Boricuas plays defense. Holding a team to 58 points is a solid effort, but they gave up 105 to China and 88 to France in the qualifiers.

However, it is worth mentioning that they were down 55-36 going into the fourth quarter and managed to make a game of it.

Spain, on the other hand, had a much more competitive game vs. China. They were behind for much of the game but completed an impressive comeback to force overtime and steal the win, 90-89.

Megan Gustafson, UNDER 17.5 Points at (-130) via BetMGM

It is easy to fall into a trap after one game. In that one game, Gustafson scored 29 points, so surely she'll go over 17.5 points, right? Not necessarily. She scored 15, 16, and 12 points in Spain's qualifiers, playing roughly 23 minutes in each game.

She will not play over 40 minutes vs. Puerto Rico (unless we get an unexpected overtime game). But she will get sufficient time to go over 17.5 points. Even if she gets pulled early because the game is well in hand, she can dominate a poor Puerto Rico team enough in limited time to score 18+.

Leonor Rodriguez, UNDER 11.5 Points at (-125) via BetMGM

After seeing her blow up for 25 points against China, surely she'll be good for more than 13.5 points - eh, probably not. Yes, she had a great game vs. China, but she has never been much of a scoring threat throughout her entire career.

She averaged under five points per game for three years at Florida State but had a respectable 14.9 per game in her final season. In the qualifiers, she scored nine in one game and zero in the other she played in. During 16 Euro league games this season, she has averaged 8.6 ppg.

She could come into her own during the Olympics and start hitting buckets like she did vs. China.  However, based on how she's played for much of her career, Monday's big game is a beautiful but isolated event.

Bet on Leonor Rodriguez (-125) Props at BetMGM

Tayra Melendez, UNDER 5.5 at (-115) via BetMGM

Melendez did not play a significant role in the opener, scoring four points in roughly 21 minutes on the court. During the qualifying tournament, she averaged just two points in approximately 18 minutes per game. There is no reason to think she'll play a more significant role on offense against a vastly superior Spain team.

China vs. Serbia - W

  • Location: Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Villeneuve d'Ascq, France

  • Game Time & Date: 7:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday, July 31

  • Coverage: Peacock, NBCOlympics.com

  • Point Spread: China -7.5 (odds via bet365)

China will be looking for some redemption in this game after losing to Spain in the opener. They led for much of the game but failed to produce when they needed big plays the most (fourth quarter and overtime).

As for Serbia, Puerto Rico has longer odds of winning gold. Expectations are low for them in the tournament. It will be surprising if they even come close to beating another team (maybe Canada).

Li Yueru, OVER 19.5 Points at (-110) via BetMGM

Yueru is the scoring leader after one game for women's basketball, scoring 29 points in a loss to Spain. Will she have such a strong game again? It is possible. She has not done much during her short time with the Sparks in the WNBA.

But during her time in the WCBA playing for the Guangdong Dolphins, she averaged over 18 ppg her last two seasons - in 2017-18 and 2018-19. In the qualifiers, she averaged  15.3 points in 22.8 minutes. She played over 33 minutes vs. Spain.

She will not play 33+ minutes in this game, but against a lackluster Serbian team, we think she'll go over 17.5 points.

Meng Li, OVER 14.5 Points at (-120) via BetMGM

Li led the team in scoring during qualifiers with 19.3 ppg in 25.4 minutes, shooting 55.9% from the field and 43.8% from the three-point line. Against Spain, she had an off night, connecting on just three of her nine shots, scoring 13 for the day.

Serbia's defense will not be nearly as challenging, making it easier for Li to get open looks at the basket.

Dragana Stankovic, OVER 12.5 Points at (-135) via BetMGM

OVER 7.5 Rebonds at (-115) via BetMGM

It is a little harder to judge how well a player on a heavy underdog will perform, but even if China blows out Serbia, we think Stankovic will go over her total. She scored 15 against Puerto Rico (6-12 from the field, 3-3 on free throws) and had the highest efficiency score in the game (23).

In the qualifying tournament, she averaged 14 ppg. She also had ten rebounds vs. Puerto Rico and averaged 6.7 during qualifiers, so there is a good chance she'll go over 7.5 in this game. However, China is a solid rebounding team (proceed with caution).
