Officially, the Big South Tournament started on Wednesday when Radford knocked off South Carolina Upstate. But the real tournament begins on Friday with the four quarterfinal games. Let's take a closer look at each game and offer a prediction for each.
After winning on Wednesday, Radford now has to face top-seeded High Point. As the top seed, the Panthers are playing on their home court. They knocked off Radford 99-74 a couple of weeks ago and are 15-1 at home this season. However, the Panthers have struggled to cover the spread during conference play while being favored in almost every game. High Point could also struggle to find motivation for a noon game against an overmatched Radford team, which could make this game closer than expected, even if the Panthers end up winning.
Pick: Radford +10.5 (-115) at FanDuel
Winthrop is typically a Big South powerhouse, although the Eagles have had a down season, finishing fourth in the regular season. They also lost three of their last four games and six of their last nine games. As for Longwood, the Lancers lost seven of eight games during the middle part of the season, only to come on strong as of late. They’ve won four of their last six games, including a win over Winthrop and an upset of High Point, so they head into the conference tournament with a lot of positive momentum.
Pick: Longwood -1.5 (-102) at FanDuel
UNC Asheville is the no. 2 seed and another program with a long history of representing the Big South in the Big Dance. Not too long ago, the Bulldogs had a stretch when they won nine of 10 games. That stretch included two wins over Charleston Southern, including a 31-point shellacking the last time these teams met. The Buccaneers don't have much positive momentum and don’t have enough scoring to compete with the Bulldogs for 40 minutes.
Pick: UNC Asheville -11.5 (-114) at FanDuel
At one point this season, Gardner-Webb lost six games in a row. Alas, the Runnin’ Bulldogs challenged themselves during the non-conference season and are battle-tested heading into the Big South Tournament. They also came on strong late in the regular season, with five wins in their last six games. To be fair, Presbyterian knocked off Gardner-Webb 77-75 the last time these teams played. But on a neutral court, the Blue Hose could be overmatched.
Pick: Gardner-Webb -5.5 (-110) at FanDuel
