It’s no huge shock to see Paul picked to win, considering he’s been far more active than his opponent and is the younger man. One thing about the fight-winner betting I did notice was just how strongly a favourite Jake is. The odds suggest the young American needs only to turn up to stretch his record with another victory. As boxing fans know, anything can happen in this sport. That’s true of every level of the game, but especially so when talking about a fighter like Chavez Jr, who has lived his life in the ring.
Do you follow the traders and trust they have the best man picked? Betting on Jake Paul at short odds isn’t ideal, but he’s already been popular in the betting exchanges, and I expect that support to continue all week as we move closer to the first bell. You can, instead, go against the grain and back the underdog, siding with valuable fight-game experience, something Chavez Jr has in spades. Betting on the underdog allows you to keep your stakes low while targeting a decent return.
Here’s an example of what a bet might look like this weekend in Anaheim:
$20 on Chavez Jr to win @ +450 (bet365)
Suppose you fancy taking the bigger price available on the more experienced fighter. You’d lay your stake on Chavez Jr and hope he delivers. When playing the fight-winner market in boxing, it doesn’t matter how he gets the result - on points or by stoppage - as long as Chavez Jr is victorious, your bet lands.
A $20 bet on Chavez Jr at +450 pays $110. That’s an $90 profit and your $20 stake back. But if Jake Paul wins or the bout ends in a draw, your bet loses, and the bookmaker keeps your stake. The fight-winner market is straightforward and can make fights more exciting. You can bet on a single or create fight night parlays from the Honda Centre.

Jake Paul heads into his latest challenge with a professional boxing record showing 11 wins against just one defeat, with seven victories scored inside the distance and the spare reverse on the scorecards. Paul made his professional debut back in 2020 in Miami when he stopped opponent Ali Eson Gib inside a round. Both men were making their debuts that evening, and Paul faced another boxing debutant in his second bout, stopping Nate Robinson in the second round in Los Angeles.
The only man to defeat “The Problem Child” to date remains English fighter Tommy Fury. The cousin of former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, Tommy, beat Paul on points over eight rounds in Saudi Arabia. Fury was the first recognised boxer Paul had faced, and the American performed much better than many critics expected. The scorecards at the end of eight rounds read 76-73, and 76-73 to Fury, with one judge returning 75-74 to Paul. Most watching the bout thought the right man won, but Jake won many new fans.
Since losing to Fury, Paul has kept active, boxing five times and scoring five wins. To get back on track, he beat Nate Diaz on points over ten rounds, stopped both Andre August and Ryan Bourland inside a round, dealt with Michael Perry in the sixth, and, most recently, defeated the man formerly known as “Iron” Mike Tyson on a judges’ decision.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr has won multiple titles in his amazing professional career spanning 61 bouts. He made his professional debut way back in 2003 in Mexico and remained undefeated until running into Sergio Martinez in 2012, dropping a 12-round points decision for the WBC world middleweight title. He quickly returned to winning ways after that setback, beating his next two opponents on points.
Despite being a fans’ favourite and loyal servant to boxing, Cesar’s last fight of note was a ten-round points decision over David Zegarra in Mexico in the winter of 2021. He’s boxed only once since, beating Uriah Hall, a man with one bout, on points over six. Is he ready to return to boxing at a challenging level? We’ll soon find out.

We’re always trying to second-guess what kind of shape Paul’s opponent will be in and whether they’re here for the money or to try and win. Chavez is a proud warrior who has been involved in many battles. He’s a great price to win, and if he has anything left in the tank, I fancy him to claim a points decision.
