Rocket Classic 2025 Intro

The Rocket Classic has dropped ‘Mortgage’ from the title but otherwise it’s becoming a familiar Tour stop now, with this the seventh edition after it appeared on the PGA TOUR schedule for the first time in 2019.

Nate Lashley won that inaugural event with -25 although that score has since been surpassed by Tony Finau who took one swing fewer when hoisting the silverware in 2022.

Four of the six editions have been won with -23 to -26 inclusive while, in a nice piece of symmetry, -18 was sufficient in 2021 and 2024 and both were carded by the same player.

That was Aussie Cameron Davis, the only non-American to win the event.

Detroit Golf Club is a stock par 72 measuring just under 7,400 yards.

It’s the creation of famed designer Donald Ross so form on his other courses could be worth checking.

They include Sedgefield Country Club, home of the Wyndham Championship, and East Lake, the regular home of the Tour Championship.

And don’t forget Ross’s most famous layout: Pinehurst No.2.

A fast start is needed in what is basically a birdie-fest and all six winners were in the top seven after 36 holes.

Last 5 Winners of the Rocket Classic

Year Champion, nationality and winning score
2024 Cameron Davis (Australia) -18
2023 Rickie Fowler (United States) -24 Playoff
2022 Tony Finau (United States) -26
2021 Cameron Davis (United States) -18 Playoff
2020 Bryson DeChambeau (United States) -23

Course Notes

  • The Donald Ross design dates back to 1906

  • It was updated to welcome its first PGA TOUR event in 2019

  • Detroit GC measures 7,370 yards and is a par 72

  • Eight different players, including Tom Kim, share the 18-hole record of 63

  • Tony Finau posted the record 72-hole aggregate score of 262 in 2022

Favorites to Win the Travelers Championship 2025

Collin Morikawa (+1100) at bet365

It may be overstating things to say Morikawa is in a funk but a modest 42nd in last week’s Travelers Championship represented an eighth tournament without a top 10. A kinder take is that he’s had two top 25s in his last three starts. The Californian is driving the ball nicely but the putter is inconsistent. The obvious plus is that he’s played this event just once and was runner-up in 2023 while 7th for Birdie Average this season is another tick.

Keegan Bradley (+1600) at bet365

Bradley now finds himself answering even more questions about whether he’ll be a playing captain at September’s Ryder Cup after the US skipper jumped to seventh in the world rankings when picking Tommy Fleetwood’s pocket with a 72nd-hole birdie to snatch victory at the Travelers Championship. That was his third top 10 in four starts so victory at TPC River Highlands didn’t come out of left field. He’s played in four Rocket Classics, posting 21-44-14-45.

Patrick Cantlay (+1600) at bet365

Take out the majors (MC at both the PGA and US Open) and Cantlay’s form is impressive. He’s enjoyed a run of 12-12-4-13 in his last four starts outside of the big ones and shot all four rounds in the 60s at the Travelers. Like Morikawa, his only start in this event (2022) resulted in second place. He’s 23rd for Birdie Average.

Fowler to Flourish

The last three American winners of this event all arrived in Detroit showing good form.

And Rickie Fowler is just about in that bracket after taking positive steps in recent weeks.

His first start in May produced 15th at the Truist Championship and, after an early exit in the PGA, he followed that with 16th (third after 54 holes) in the Charles Schwab Challenge and seventh at Memorial.

A slow start cost him last time at the Travelers but weekend laps of 64-67 give Fowler momentum to launch a Rocket Classic bid

Fowler has cashed in five of his six starts here, the clear highlight his win two years ago when a playoff success over Adam Hadwin ended a four-year victory drought.

Also 12th in 2020, Fowler was in the top 20 after three rounds last year before a Sunday slip.

The signs are promising so back Fowler to match Cam Davis and win this event for a second time.

Fowler is +3500 each-way (¼ Odds, 5 Places) with bet365 to triumph again in Motor City.

Hall to Beat Kim

Harry Hall is one of the PGA Tour’s form golfers after connecting five top 25s.

That run continued with ninth place in an elite field at the Travelers Championship last week where he broke 70 in all four rounds.

I’ll back the Englishman to beat Si Woo Kim in a 72-hole match. It’s a -110 pick ‘em at bet365.

This is a birdie-fest in Detroit so Hall’s seasonal rankings of 2nd for SG: Putting and 4th for Birdie Average bode very well.

Kim, meanwhile, had to withdraw from the Travelers last Friday due to a back problem. He was +8 at the time and struggling.

But even if the Korean is fit to take part here, Hall holds the aces.

Hisatsune to Land Top 10

Brian Harman landed us a +450 winning Top 10 bet when eighth at the Travelers Championship on Sunday.

Let’s chase a bigger payout here with a punt on Ryo Hisatsune in the same market at a healthy +800 with bet365.

The Japanese golfer has four Top 10s already this season while he was third on another Donald Ross track, Sedgefield, in last year’s Wyndham Championship.

Hisatsune shot middle rounds of 65-67 on his Detroit GC debut last year when 31st but, on current form, can grab a place on the final leaderboard this time.
