USMNT Already Through to Last 16 with a Game to Spare

The USMNT warmed up for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the worst way possible. Having lost twice in the Nations League in the March international break, the aim was to build some momentum for this summer’s tournament in a couple of warm-up friendlies.

Instead, the USMNT lost 2-1 to Turkey and 4-0 to Switzerland. In that second game, they were four goals down at half-time. A year out from World Cup 2026, there was considerable cause for concern. Mauricio Pochettino still had many doubters to win over.

He still does. Victories over Trinidad & Tobago and Saudi Arabia are not enough to move the dial. But the USMNT have at least stopped the rot. After thrashing the Caribbean side 5-0 on matchday one, the Stars and Stripes edged out the Saudis by a goal to nil on Thursday. That was enough to seal their place in the knockout phase.

Both the USMNT and Saudi Arabia have arrived at the Gold Cup without numerous key players. There are a few familiar faces at Pochettino’s disposal, but many of his star men are absent after a gruelling European season. One of those who is part of the Gold Cup roster scored the winner last time out, with Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards making the difference.

It was not as dominant an offensive performance from the USMNT compared to the blowout against Trinidad & Tobago. But Saudi Arabia were always going to be a tougher nut to crack, and although the hosts did not create too many clear-cut chances, they gave up even fewer opportunities at the other end.

I think [we coped] very well with the pressure,” Pochettino said. “I think it wasn't easy game. They're very competitive. I think for the victory, I am so happy because I think to compete against these types of teams, I think for our team, for our players, it is massive because I think the way that you learn, and in the way that you put yourself outside of the comfortable zone.

Haiti Need Huge Performance to Qualify for the Round of 16

Haiti are not out of contention for the knockout phase yet. They may have only taken one point from the first six available in Group D, but it is not impossible that they end up in the round of 16. Realistically, though, Haiti are staring elimination in the face.

To make it through from here, the Grenadiers must beat the USMNT and hope that Saudi Arabia lose to Trinidad & Tobago. A Haiti win by two clear goals and a Saudi draw would also be sufficient to extend Haiti’s participation. However, it is hard enough to see either of those things happening, never mind both of them.

Haiti were semi-finalists at this competition in 2019, but they suffered group stage exits in 2021 and 2023. It looks like the same fate could befall them this summer. They will still be kicking themselves at their failure to beat Trinidad & Tobago, not least because Haiti missed a late penalty that would have brought them a 2-1 victory.

It was a frustrating game for Haiti, who had to play with 10 men for more than half of the 90 minutes after Jean-Kevin Duverne was sent off late in the first half. In that light a 1-1 draw was a decent outcome, but overall it has set back Haiti’s ambitions. Still, there is not much use in dwelling on that now.

Haiti as a country has gone through turmoil over the last few years, but the national team drew confidence from their promotion to League A of the Nations League in the latest edition. However, they were always going to struggle to reach the last 16 of the Gold Cup after being drawn alongside Saudi Arabia and the pre-tournament favorites USMNT.

USMNT Can End Group Stage with a Win and a Clean Sheet

The one silver lining for Haiti is that the USMNT are already through to the next round, so there is a chance they will rest players here. Pochettino went with the same XI against both Trinidad & Tobago and Saudi Arabia, so he will doubtless be thinking about giving certain players the evening off, especially as top spot in Group D is virtually guaranteed.

The USMNT are set to face either Mexico or Costa Rica in the round of 16. Needless to say, that will be a step up from the group phase. Pochettino and his coaching staff will already be looking ahead to that encounter, which will take place in either Glendale or Minneapolis.

But even if the USMNT do go with a reserve XI here, they should still be good enough to emerge triumphant. Pochettino’s team have been defensively solid so far, shutting out Trinidad & Tobago and Saudi Arabia in successive contests.

Another clean sheet beckons here against a Haiti side that is probably heading home. Go for a win to nil for the USMNT on matchday three of the group stage.
