On Tuesday night, the Milwaukee Brewers will visit the Minnesota Twins, with an intriguing pitching matchup set to unfold at Target Field. Corbin Burnes headlines that pitching matchup for the Brewers, who have fallen back into second place in the NL Central standings. But the Twins certainly have the potential to get the better of Burnes in this interleague matchup between Central division opponents.
The Milwaukee Brewers come into Tuesday night having lost four games in a row. They were beaten in the final game of their series against the Baltimore Orioles last week, before suffering an embarrassing three-game sweep at the hands of the Oakland Athletics. As a result, the Pittsburgh Pirates have leaped ahead of the Brewers in the NL Central standings once again, which the Brewers will look to remedy starting with this contest.
For Milwaukee, Corbin Burnes is on the mound to start this matchup, who has not been as good as expected throughout this season. Burnes is 5-4 on the year, posting a 3.36 ERA in his 77.2 innings of work. He came into the year as one of the favorites to win the NL Cy Young award but has fallen significantly behind the leaders in that race thus far, and will need to pitch well in games like this one to get back into contention.
Meanwhile, the offense of the Brewers has been letting them down in a big way during the 2023 season, especially during their recent losing streak. In their four straight losses, the Brewers have scored a combined 12 runs, averaging three runs per game. That might not even be good enough with Burnes on the mound in this contest, as Milwaukee really needs to find a spark with their offense.
The Minnesota Twins have won two of their last three games, though they did lose their last game to the Toronto Blue Jays. Minnesota is at the top of the AL Central standings, leading the Cleveland Guardians by 1.5 games going into Tuesday’s action. Here, they send Pablo Lopez to the mound, who will look to deal the Brewers their fifth straight loss when all is said and done in Minnesota.
This season, Lopez is 3-3 for the year, posting an ERA of 4.25 in his 78.1 innings pitched. Lopez is coming off of one of his best outings of the 2023 season in his last start, where he gave up just one run in seven innings against the Tampa Bay Rays. Lopez and the Twins were hard done not to get the win in that game, but another pitching performance like that could help the Twins get a win this time around.
Offensively, the Twins come in swinging the bats well, as they scored 15 runs over their last two games against the Blue Jays. That includes a 9-4 win on Saturday, where they collected 12 hits, including three home runs across the seventh and eighth innings to pull away from the Jays. While power like that could be hard to replicate against Burnes, it cannot be ruled out with a Twins lineup that is tied for seventh in the majors in home runs as a team in 2023.
