Home Run Picks for Thursday, August 6

There are some fantastic home run props out there today, but some stand above the rest. Below are the three players we’re locked in on.

Brice Turang Anytime Home Run (+630) at FanDuel Sportsbook

Turang has 16 home runs on the season, putting him just two shy of matching his career-high of 18, set last season. While that doesn’t make him a true power hitter, it shows the 26-year-old is continuing to grow as a hitter. That gives us confidence to back him to go deep in certain situations, and we believe tonight is one of those.

Turang’s overall offensive numbers aren’t super impressive, but that’s largely due to his struggle against left-handed pitchers. Against righties, he’s batting an impressive .292 with 15 home runs and a .904 OPS. Those are All-Star numbers, and give us extra reason to take him with a righty on the mound to start today.

Braxton Ashcraft (11-4, 3.96 ERA, 1.16 WHIP) will get the start for the Buccos today. He is coming off a good start, but was hammered hard in June, posting a 7.78 ERA with five home runs allowed over 19 ⅔ innings (4 starts). That makes it hard to trust his latest outing, which only lasted five innings.

Ashcraft’s biggest weakness is left-handed hitters like Turang. They’ve accounted for 13 of the 17 home runs he’s allowed this season, and we expect that total to grow today.

Pete Alonso Anytime Home Run (+290) at FanDuel Sportsbook

The Orioles are posting another disappointing season, but that can’t be blamed on Pete Alonso. The former Mets star leads the team with 23 home runs while batting a solid .251. He’s also adjusted well to his new home this season, where he’s hit 14 of those long balls.

Alonso and the Orioles will face Angels starter Ryan Johnson (2-6, 7.63 ERA, 1.59 WHIP) today. The 24-year-old had seemed to be figuring things out over the summer, but that is no longer the case. Over his last two starts, the righty has allowed 13 ER and two home runs over 7 ⅔ innings. 

Johnson has also struggled when on the road, which is the situation he’ll be in today. He’s 0-4 with a 9.55 ERA and six home runs allowed over 21 ⅔ innings when away from Anaheim this season. Don’t expect that to change today as the young pitcher remains mired in a brutal slump.

Bryce Harper Anytime Home Run (+285) at FanDuel Sportsbook

Harper is coming off a brutal July, but that appears to be over early in August. He opened the month with two home runs and a 1.317 OPS through the first four games, once again looking like a candidate for the NL MVP. Considering the slugger had a red-hot June, we believe his recent success is likely to continue.

A big reason why we’re backing Harper today is Nationals starter Miles Mikolas (3-8, 5.67 ERA, 1.35 WHIP). The 37-year-old isn’t the pitcher he once was, and he is struggling to keep the ball in the park. He’s allowed the second-most home runs (26) of any MLB pitcher this season and shows no signs of improvement in that area. He allowed three home runs in his last start (6 innings), and six over his last three (13 ⅔ innings). 

Harper will be happy to see Mikolas on the mound regardless of his recent play. He has faced the veteran 26 times and posted a .346 average, 1.024 OPS, and two home runs. 

Once Mikolas exits, he’ll turn things over to a Washington bullpen that has allowed a whopping 78 home runs this season. That leads the MLB, with just one other bullpen allowing 70+.
