The New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins both have championship aspirations this season, making their matchup on Tuesday must-see television. Combine that with the fact that both teams are starting All-Star caliber pitchers, and this game gets even more exciting. With Nestor Cortes and Joe Ryan on the mound on Tuesday night, runs could be hard to come by when these teams meet in Minneapolis.
The New York Yankees come into Tuesday night on a bit of a cold spell, having lost three of their last four games to legitimate contenders in the American League. They lost two of three over the weekend to the Toronto Blue Jays before dropping Monday’s series opener against the Minnesota Twins. Now the Yankees will look to pick up the pieces and rebound with a win behind the pitching of Nestor Cortes.
Cortes is a perfect 3-0 so far this season, posting a 3.09 ERA along the way. He has pitched against the Twins once already this season, giving up two earned runs in seven innings of work, though the Yankees lost that game by a score of 4-3. Cortes struck out seven batters in that game, and another performance just like that one from the Yankees starter will give his team a great chance to win this contest.
But the real question going into this game will be whether or not the Yankees can put runs on the board against Joe Ryan. Ryan shut the Yankees down in their lone game against him earlier this year, and the Yankees will need to find a way to get something going against him this time around. After scoring just one run on Monday, the Yankees are in legitimate danger of being shut down for a second night in a row in the Midwest.
The Minnesota Twins have won two games in a row going into Tuesday, winning their series finale with the Washington Nationals before beating the Yankees on Monday. Minnesota has struggled historically against the Yankees, especially in the postseason, but they have gone toe to toe with the Yankees so far this year. With Joe Ryan on the mound in this game, the Twins will be confident that they can do so yet again.
Ryan is 4-0 so far this season, posting an ERA of 3.24 in 25 innings of work. He pitched seven innings against the Yankees earlier this season, holding New York to just one run across seven innings. He struck out 10 Yankees in that game, tying a season high in that department, and his ability to miss Yankee bats could be the difference between a win and a loss in this game on Tuesday night.
Offensively, the Twins have been a feast-or-famine bunch this year, as evidenced by their play against the Yankees this season. Minnesota scored 11 runs in Ryan’s last start against the Yankees but scored a combined one run in two games later in that series in New York. Here, the Twins will look for a second straight game where they play well offensively, after putting up six runs on the Yankees a night ago.

I am a huge sports fan; locally, many know me as the guy who does the PA for our high school football team on Friday nights. Having grown up in Michigan, I am a sports fan of all the Detroit teams, and at the college level, I love Michigan State sports.
