Atlanta United do not have a positive record against Inter Miami in the MLS. They have lost thrice to their opponents and won just twice in eight meetings so far. This weekend, another draw is on the cards. Both sides are not in good scoring form this season and are sitting towards the bottom of the table.
When the two sides met back in April, Inter Miami managed to pull off a 2-1 win. Leonardo Campana and Bryce Duke scored in either half to help their side come back from 1-0 down to win the game. Ronaldo Cisneros had handed the away side an early lead, while VAR ruled out a penalty for them in the final 10 minutes of the game.
To make things worse for Atlanta, they had dominated the game. They had 63 percent of the possession, 20 shots, seven of which were on target. However, they could only create three good chances and missed two of them.
On the other hand, Inter Miami had just two shots on target and scored from both. They were happy to sit back and defend as the away side did all the hard work. Phil Neville’s side created just two chances in the entire game and managed to score from both. They needed their keeper Nick Marsman to be on top of his game, and he produced four saves to help them collect all three points.
Atlanta United had a good pre-season, and were one of the sides tipped to do well in the league this season. They had won four of their five friendly matches ahead of the season opener and lost just once – 3-0 to Chivas USA.
Their season did kick off in fine fashion with a 3-1 win over Sporting Kansas City. Luiz Araújo and Dom Dwyer handed them a 2-0 lead at halftime, and the away side had to fight hard until the 85th minute to half the deficit. Dániel Sallói got on the scoresheet to make it an exciting finish, but Caleb Wiley sealed the win for the home side with a goal just before the 90th minute.
However, they could not replicate the same in the next match and ended up losing 3-0 to Colorado Rapids. They had the possession and more shots, but the home side scored from all three of their shots on target and managed to leave with all three points.
Jake Mulraney helped them seal a dramatic win over Charlotte FC in the next match with a goal in the 96th minute. Atlanta United took the lead via Josef Martínez’s penalty at the hour mark but were pulled back level on terms six minutes later by Adam Armour. Both sides went for the win, but it was the home side who succeeded with the final kick of the match.
Their inconsistent form continued as they managed just one win in their next four matches. They lost to Charlotte FC, drew to CF Montreal and FC Cincinnati, and picked up their only win away at DC United.
They went on to thrash Chattanooga FC 6-0 in the US Open Cup, but their form has been abysmal since then. Atlanta United have just one win in the league, which was a 4-1 win against bottom placed Chicago Fire. In the other five matches, they have lost to Inter Miami, CF Montreal, and Columbus Crew while drawing against New England Revolution and Nashville SC.
They were also then knocked out of the US Open Cup by Nashville SC during this poor run. Despite going 2-0 up in the 29th minute, the away side could not hold on to their lead and lost the match.
They gave away a penalty in the 50th minute, which Hany Mukhtar converted, and Charles Sapong completed the comeback with a goal in the 92nd minute to level things up. Ethan Zubak scored the lone goal in Extra Time for Nashville, and they ended up winning 3-2.
Osvaldo Alonso, Machop Chol, Dylan Castanheira, Bradley Guzan and Miles Robinson are ruled out.
Inter Miami had a start to forget this season as they went winless in their first five matches. They managed to pick up just one point from their games, scoring three goals and conceding 13 times.
They kicked off with a goalless draw at home to Chicago Fire and then went on a 4-match losing streak. They had 17 shots in the opening game, but only three were on target and none hit the back of the net.
Austin FC were up next for Phil Neville’s side, and they were thrashed 5-1. The new side from Texas were 3-0 when Leonardo Campana pulled one back for the away side, but Ethan Finlay ensured there were no comebacks by scoring a brace. Losses to Los Angeles FC, FC Cincinnati, and Houston Dynamo followed, leaving them at the bottom of the table.
Inter Miami finally ended their winless streak by picking up a 3-2 win over the New England Revolution. Leonardo Campana scored a hattrick, which included an 88th minute winner to seal the win.
They followed it up with wins over Seattle Sounders and Atlanta United in the league, while also edging out a 1-0 win over Miami FC in the US Open Cup. Neville’s side could not keep the good run going for long as they were beaten in back-to-back games by New England Revolution and Charlotte FC.
Since then, they have managed to steady the ship and are now on a four-match unbeaten run. They drew 2-2 with DC United and 0-0 against Philadelphia Union, before picking up wins over New York Red Bulls and Portland Timbers in the last two game weeks.
However, their run in the US Open Cup came to an end during this good run in the league. After beating South Georgia Tormenta FC in the previous round, they could not get past Orlando City and lost 4-2 in the penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in Extra Time. Jean Mota had handed them the lead in the 94th minute, but Facundo Torres scored three minutes later for the home side to level things up and take the game into the penalty shootout.
Nick Marsman, Joevin Jones, Ian Fray, and Robbie Robinson are ruled out.
