Inter Miami CF and CF Montreal are on a winning run right now, and the match this weekend will be a tight one. However, the away side should get the win, given how the season has been and the fact that they need it more than the home side.
When the two sides met earlier this season, the match ended in a 2-2 draw. Romell Quioto scored a brace in the first half for CF Montreal, while goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Emerson Rodríguez ensured Inter Miami got a draw at the end.
The home side took the lead in the 5th minute via Quioto but could not hold on to it for a minute. Higuain scored straight from kickoff to level things up, and the match looked set to be a thriller.
CF Montreal won a penalty in the 20th minute, and Quioto made no mistake from the spot to double the lead. The Canadian side did well to hold on to the lead this time, but let it slip at the end of the match.
Emerson Rodríguez scored the equalizer for Inter Miami in the 79th minute to make it 2-2, and the match ended with the same scoreline.
A similar match is highly likely this weekend as well, but we could see a lot more pressure from Montreal if they have a chance to go on top of the table at the end of the match.
Inter Miami were winless after the first match matches this season, and Phil Neville was already under pressure. The former English defender had a lot of work to do to turn things around but managed to get there in the end.
However, things did not happen without a lot of struggle as Inter Miami had to go on a 4-match winning streak to get over the line. They managed to get there with a match in hand and can now take a break and rest a few players before the playoffs.
Neville’s side were on a 3-match losing streak with 5 games left in the season. They needed to get as many wins as possible to have any chance of making it to the playoffs and they managed four in a row.
The winning streak started with a 2-1 win over Columbus Crew, a game in which Gonzalo Higuain scored a late winner for the home side. It was another close call for Inter Miami as the Argentine scored a stoppage-time winner against DC United in the next game.
The former Real Madrid striker, who is set to retire at the end of the season, made it three winners in a row as he scored another late goal, this time against Toronto in the 86th minute to seal a 1-0 win. The Argentine followed it up with a brace over Orlando City on Wednesday as Inter Miami ran out 4-1 winners.
Gonzalo Higuain was the hero for Inter Miami when they last won a match against CF Montreal. In the meeting back in August 2021, the striker scored a brace in the second half to seal a come-from-behind win.
Joaquín Torres scored the opening goal of the match for Montreal in the 20th minute before Higuain canceled out the goal in the 49th minute from the spot. The former Real Madrid star made it 2-1 in the 69th minute, and his side held on to the lead until the very end.
Inter Miami do not have anything to play for this weekend as they have already sealed their place in the playoffs. They are likely to rest a few senior players and give them a break ahead of the playoffs while also giving an opportunity to the fringe players.
CF Montreal are on a five-match unbeaten streak right now and will be keen on making it four wins in a row at the end. They have the best away record in the league this season, with 10 wins from their 16 matches so far. The Canadian side are also on a 5-match unbeaten streak in the away matches right now.
Romell Quioto has been in red-hot form for them in the league with 15 goals so far. Djordje Mihailović and Kei Kamara have managed to contribute with 8 goals each to make things better.
Kamara leads the way in assists this season for Montreal with 7 so far. Quioto is close behind with 5 assists, while Lassi Lappalainen has matched that tally as well.
Björn Johnsen still remains out for the away side as he is yet to recover from his foot surgery. The forward has been out since March this year and is unlikely to make another appearance this season.
Mathieu Choinière was the hero for CF Montreal last season when they faced Inter Miami at home. The winger wing-back scored the lone goal of the match in the 41st minute to seal the win.
The Canadian side dominated the game and had 17 shots at goal, but were unable to force the Inter Miami defense into making mistakes.
They had to work hard for the win, but eventually got the goal they were looking for, towards the end of the first half. They restricted the away side to just 5 goals in the game, of which only 3 were on target and easily saved by the keeper.
CF Montreal do have a chance to top the Eastern Conference and will be going all out for the win. They are guaranteed to finish at least second regardless of what happens on the final day, and 3rd placed New York City FC are 10 points behind going into the last game.
In the overall table, they have sealed a top 3 finish as 4th placed Austin FC are 7 points behind. Montreal cannot top the overall table as they are 5 points behind Los Angeles FC right now.
