Both sides are within the playoff spots in the Eastern Conference with five points separating them. Inter Miami have a game to spare but this is definitely a must-not-lose tie for the club owned by David Beckham.
Inter Miami head into this tie with form on their side, unbeaten in their last five matches, whereas New York Red Bulls have only got one win in their last six. The Red Bulls play at home, however, and they should have enough to handle Inter Miami but there doesn’t seem to be a lot between the two sides heading into this one. In their five meetings so far, Inter Miami have come out on top thrice and New York Red Bulls twice. They’ve never contested a draw but this has all the makings of being their first.
The last meeting between these sides ended favorably for Inter Miami back in May. An Areil Lassiter goal in the 29th minute gave Inter Miami the lead after which they conceded some territory and possession, having 46 percent on the day before cementing the win thanks to Robert Thomas Taylor strike in the 88th minute.
It was a tight game with both teams taking quite a few shots on goals but as always, the team scoring first will control the game state, which was the case for Inter Miami on the day.
New York Red Bulls have dropped their level and a lot of points in recent weeks and it was more of the same against FC Cincinnati in a 1-1 draw. The positive out of this game was getting Patrick Klimala on the scoresheet, the forward’s first in three months, from the penalty spot. It takes his tally for the season to five. Matt Miazga scored the other goal in the game, which now sees New York Red Bulls in fourth place on the Eastern Conference standings.
The problem in recent weeks has been the lack of firepower up front. Patrick Klimala scoring his first goal in three months sums up some of the issues this side has been facing in the last few weeks. The one time they did find the back of the goal was against the Colorado Rapids a few weeks back but it was part of a 4-5 loss, which just sums up the feeling around the club at the moment.
As is often the case with teams that press quite aggressively, (5066 pressures so far in this campaign with the next best managing 4200) they rely heavily on that pressure and opposition turnovers to come up with their chances. This isn’t a reliant source of goals. Lewis Morgan, who has scored 11 goals so far this season is also their main source of creativity with four assists to his name. The lack of creative edge can be exposed by teams that decided to bypass the press entirely and it looks like that’s been part of the issue for New York Red Bulls in recent weeks.
Ariel Lassiter was the hero for Inter Miami in the final minutes against a resurgent Toronto FC side to take them to 6th place in the Eastern Conference table on the weekend. Jean Moto opened the scoring in the 24th minute but Toronto FC’s new superstar Lorenzo Insigne found the back of the net four minutes later to get the visitors level. Inter Miami love playing Toronto FC and will be hoping that they can say the same about the New York Red Bulls after this game.
There’s little margin for error in the Eastern Conference with everything so tight in mid-table. For a while, it looked like Inter Miami were unlikely to even come close but they now know what it feels like to be in the playoff spots and their job going forward is to hang in there.
The team owned by David Beckham have spent a lot of money and have great ambitions and manager, Phil Neville, has had to feel the heat all summer. This has been one of their better runs all season. They haven’t won all their games during this run but as long as they’re not dropping all three, they should be in contention for the playoffs. Gonzala Higuain is another big name who’s found form in recent weeks and taken his goal tally to eight for the season.
There are still quite a lot of issues like the defense, with the team having conceded 42 goals so far this term. The expected goals against value doesn’t suggest that they’ve been that unfortunate at 37.6 either. Much of this little run seems unsustainable but they’ll have to use all the intangibles in their favor as they have done in recent weeks. The win on the weekend was one of the many comebacks in recent weeks. Something seems to have kicked the team into gear after the 4-4 draw with FC Cincinnati and they’ll need to go into most games with the same mentality and attitude to keep themselves in the hunt for that playoffs spot.
