Choose Manchester City to win both halves. Pep Guardiola’s side should beat Burnley with a minimum of fuss in this clash between 19th and second in the Premier League.

All of a sudden, the Premier League title race is out of Arsenal’s hands. Manchester City won the titanic tussle at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, as goals from Rayan Cherki (the man of the moment in England’s top flight) and Erling Haaland earned them a 2-1 victory over Arsenal.
The Gunners are still top for now, but that will not be the case if City emerge triumphant at Turf Moor on Wednesday in a fixture that has been brought forward from the weekend. The gap between the pair is down to three points, and City have a game in hand against Crystal Palace to come.
The two title contenders will have played the same number of matches after this clash at Turf Moor, but Arsenal are back in action against Newcastle United on Saturday when City face Southampton at Wembley Stadium in the FA Cup semi-finals.
The momentum is undoubtedly with City, who have now gone 10 matches unbeaten in the top flight. Once again, Guardiola seems to have perfectly paced the season so that City hit their peak in the spring, otherwise known as the business end of the campaign. Arsenal, conversely, appeared to hit top form in the fall, before suffering a dip in 2026.
“So far, they are the best team in England, but of course we extend the chance and the hopes to fight until the end,” Guardiola said after the victory that put City hot on Arsenal’s heels.
“I would be satisfied with a draw or a defeat. When I see what I see in my team, what can I say? I cannot complain at all, I'm so proud because they are top. I have been so demanding, but the reality is it is just one game. They are top of the league with one goal difference [better than Manchester City]. We have to enjoy it, celebrate it, take the good things, but do not lose the focus. The focus is in three days, we go to Burnley.”

Burnley will be in the Championship next season regardless of the result on Wednesday, but a loss would confirm their relegation if West Ham United avoid defeat by Crystal Palace on Monday night. At the time of writing, we do not know the outcome of that London derby at Selhurst Park, but it is fair to say that no one expects Burnley to stay up from here.
For a while on Sunday, it looked like Burnley might claim for themselves a stay of execution. They led Nottingham Forest 1-0 at half-time at the City Ground, where a win would have kept their faint survival hopes alive. But Scott Parker’s men conceded four times after the interval, leaving them second-bottom of the standings ahead of Manchester City’s visit.
Burnley have been out of their depth this term. They have not been able to compete at this level, unlike their fellow promoted teams Sunderland and Leeds United. That is something the club must reflect on in the summer, when Burnley will set about preparing for what they hope will be another promotion challenge.
"The team have got scars and I understand that because it has been a long season,” Parker said on Sunday. “What you have seen today has been a replica of other games. You can see at times that is weighting heavy, particularly when we conceded. Senior players need to step up.
“I am never going to criticise our general work ethic and desire. Where we have fallen short is quality. We will keep going. It is a difficult period now, but it's about individuals, who you want to be and how you want to see out these last games. How we end this season will be key.”

Manchester City thumped Burnley 5-1 in the reverse fixture. There was a gulf in class between the two teams that day, and we anticipate another one-sided encounter when City head to Turf Moor this week.
Guardiola has found a winning formula. For a while he was struggling to come up with one this season, but the decision to pull Bernardo Silva into a deeper midfield role has paid dividends. That has allowed the City boss to field a frightening front four of Antoine Semenyo, Cherki, Jeremy Doku and Haaland. No defense would want to face that quartet.
Certainly not Burnley’s, which was unable to prevent Nottingham Forest scoring four goals last time out. Given how comprehensively the Clarets were beaten by another relegation battler, they are in danger of being blown away by City.
With goal difference a potential tiebreaker in the title race, Guardiola’s side are incentivised to hold nothing back on Wednesday. With that in mind, we recommend backing them to win both halves against Burnley. It is not easy to do so even when you are a superior side, but City’s confidence is high and they will be keen to make a statement of intent on their way to first place in the Premier League table.
