Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur 2026 05 19

My -125 Pick for Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur

Go for a Tottenham Hotspur win or a draw on Tuesday. Spurs have a surprisingly good record at opposition grounds, while Chelsea’s recent record is poor. The north Londoners should avoid defeat.

Tottenham Hotspur on the Cusp of Salvation in Final Week

Tottenham Hotspur fans will be glad to see the back of what has been a horrendous season. Had you told a follower of the north London club last summer that Spurs would be 17th in the Premier League table heading into the final week of the campaign, they would have been horrified. And yet, in the short term at least, Tottenham supporters are daring to be optimistic for the first time in a while.

The job is not done yet, but Spurs are now in an excellent position in their battle against relegation. West Ham United’s 3-1 defeat by Newcastle United on Sunday has left them two points adrift of safety with one match left to play. That means if Tottenham beat either Chelsea on Tuesday or Everton on Sunday, they will be mathematically safe.

But to all intents and purposes, they do not even need to win. Given Tottenham’s goal difference is vastly superior to West Ham’s, a point in either of their two remaining matches would get them over the line. Avoiding defeat at Stamford Bridge, in other words, would keep Spurs’ heads above water.

De Zerbi deserves credit for his work up to now. He inherited a difficult situation and a team whose confidence levels were depleted. His first game in charge brought a 1-0 loss to Sunderland, a result which left Tottenham in the bottom three and two points adrift of safety. Some wondered whether De Zerbi had made a massive mistake by taking the job.

West Ham’s collapse in form - they have lost three games in a row, scoring just one goal in that time - has certainly helped. But since that Sunderland defeat, only five teams in the Premier League have taken more points per game than Tottenham. Away wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa were particularly crucial, leaving Spurs on the brink of survival.

Alonso Waiting in Wings as Chelsea Embark on Fresh Approach

Chelsea will have a new man in the dugout at the start of next season. Xabi Alonso has agreed a four-year deal with the Blues, signing a contract as manager rather than head coach. That suggests the club’s hierarchy have recognized the need for a new way of doing things after a difficult few years.

When BlueCo took the reins at Stamford Bridge in 2022, they took over a team that had won the Champions League a year earlier. Needless to say, Chelsea have not even got close to that prize since then. The owners implemented a scattergun approach to recruitment, prioritizing young players and handing them contracts of unprecedented length. It has failed.

After sacking Thomas Tuchel, BlueCo turned to Graham Potter. That did not work. Neither did the appointment of Liam Rosenior, sacked in April after just three months at the helm. The two head coaches who had relative success were Mauricio Pochettino and Enzo Maresca, but both departed because the Chelsea hierarchy was not willing to relinquish any control.

Alonso’s job title hints at a change of direction. The Spaniard, who led Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title in an unbeaten campaign, will doubtless have asked many questions before agreeing to take over in west London. Chelsea will probably look to bring in more experience in the summer transfer window.

For now, the focus is on finishing as high up the Premier League table as possible. Chelsea can still finish as high as sixth, although that is unlikely. Seventh or eighth are more realistic, and both places would see Chelsea qualify for Europe next term. But some fans would probably rather see their team miss out, allowing Alonso more time on the training field in his debut season.

Tottenham Can Get the Result They Need at Stamford Bridge

The idea that Tottenham Hotspur might celebrate avoiding relegation to the Championship would have seemed bizarre at the start of the season. Even though they finished 17th last year, no one anticipated a demotion dogfight for Spurs this term. But having got themselves into this position, there will be an outpouring of relief if and when Tottenham safeguard their top-tier status.

They only need a point on Tuesday, but Chelsea will fight hard to deny them one. This is their last home game of a difficult campaign, and the players will want to go out on a high. They will also be mindful that Alonso will be watching as he casts his eye over the roster. The supporters, meanwhile, would love to deal a blow to Tottenham’s survival chances.

But we like the look of the double chance market, which gives the option to back a draw or a Tottenham win. There is no doubt that Spurs have looked better under De Zerbi. They are playing with more energy and intensity, and they have looked stronger at the back too. Spurs are not quite so easy to play against anymore.

They can also draw confidence from a surprisingly solid away record. Only Arsenal and Manchester City have picked up more points at opposition stadiums in 2025/26. Whether it is one point or three, Tottenham can save their skin and send West Ham United down on Tuesday.
