Win or Bust for West Ham United on the Final Weekend

And so it all comes down to this. By the end of Sunday, we will know which three clubs have been relegated from the Premier League. Two of the spots have already been filled, by Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers. The other demoted team will be either West Ham United or Tottenham Hotspur.

Going into the final weekend of the campaign, West Ham are at a disadvantage. They trail Tottenham by two points after 37 rounds of fixtures. Not only that, but the Hammers have a significantly inferior goal difference too. That means they must beat Leeds United and hope that Everton defeat Tottenham Hotspur. Any other combination of results would send Nuno Espirito Santo’s side into the Championship.

At the start of the year, it looked like West Ham were dead and buried. When they lost 2-1 at home to Nottingham Forest in early January, Nuno’s side slipped seven points adrift of safety. At that stage, Tottenham Hotspur were no fewer than 13 points clear of their London rivals. In the Premier League table since that match, West Ham rank 10th and Tottenham sit 19th.

And yet, it is also true that West Ham are kicking themselves for being in the bottom three going into matchday 38. Their form has deserted them at the worst possible time, with the east Londoners losing three games on the spin to Brentford, Arsenal and Newcastle United. Had they triumphed in just one of those encounters, they would be 17th right now.

West Ham fans will be frantically checking the scoreline of the Tottenham game throughout their meeting with Everton, but the team must be fully focused on the task in front of them. If West Ham do not beat Leeds, they will be down regardless of what happens at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Only a victory here would keep their hopes of survival alive.

Leeds United Celebrating Excellent Season Back in Top Flight

Before the season began, Leeds United were among the favorites for the drop. That remained the case a few months into 2025/26, as Daniel Farke’s side struggled to get used to the step up following promotion last term. But once Farke shifted to a three-man defense during a game against Manchester City towards the end of November, everything suddenly clicked.

In the 24 matches since that setback at the Etihad Stadium, Leeds have lost only four times - and two of those defeats came at the hands of Arsenal and Manchester City, the two best teams in the division. They have, to all intents and purposes, been playing at the level of a mid-table team for months now.

Farke deserves great credit for his work this season. It is fair to say the German had his doubters at this level. At Norwich City, he did not look cut out for Premier League management. The board should be praised for keeping their cool too. It would have been easy for them to sack Farke early on, but they kept faith in the coach who took Leeds up and have been rewarded subsequently.

If they want to kick on next season, Leeds will need to invest this summer. There are areas of the starting XI that can be improved, never mind the squad. But that is a matter for another day. On Sunday, Leeds will be aiming to end the season on a high as they reflect on a job well done on their return to the top tier of English soccer.

Leeds United Can Send West Ham United Down to Second Tier

On paper, this looks like an ideal assignment for West Ham United on the final weekend. Leeds United are a bottom-half team rather than one of the heavyweights of the Premier League. They have nothing meaningful to play for in their last match. And the match is taking place at the London Stadium, West Ham’s home ground, rather than Elland Road, Leeds’ stadium.

Soccer is not played on paper, though, and this is a much tougher fixture than it might appear at first glance. For one, Leeds do not lose matches very often, as demonstrated by the aforementioned statistic of their four defeats in 24 games since the beginning of December.

Away from home, they have been beaten only once in their last 14 matches in all competitions. And although Leeds have nothing to play for, they are in good form. No team in the division has picked up more points than the Whites across the last six rounds of Premier League contests. All of a sudden, this does not look quite so straightforward for West Ham.

There is also the prospect of the Hammers’ nerves getting the better of them. We also cannot rule out a sudden drop in motivation if news reaches the London Stadium that Tottenham Hotspur hold a healthy lead over Everton.

All of which makes the double chance market the best bet here. Go for a Leeds United win or a draw in this huge game on the final day of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
