Tottenham Hotspur’s Fate Remains in Their Own Hands

Tottenham Hotspur have one last chance to save themselves. After West Ham United lost to Newcastle United last weekend, Spurs knew that one point from their final two games would be enough to secure Premier League survival. They did not get what they needed on Tuesday, going down to a 2-1 defeat by Chelsea. And so their fate will be determined on the final day.

How on earth did Tottenham get themselves in this position? After all, they were Champions League finalists just seven years ago. In 2021/22, they beat Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal to a fourth-place finish. Just last year, they won the Europa League to earn themselves a place in the Champions League again.

Yet even throughout that period, Tottenham’s performances had generally been trending in the wrong direction. In seven seasons (including this one) since they finished as Champions League runners-up in 2019, Tottenham have finished in the top four only once.

Even last season, when the club won its first trophy since 2008 in the form of the Europa League, Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League. Relegation was never really a possibility last time out owing to the uncompetitiveness of the three relegated clubs. Fast forward 12 months and the prospect of demotion to the Championship is all too real for Tottenham supporters.

It would undoubtedly be the most shocking relegation in Premier League history. The wealthiest clubs in the division are supposed to be protected from events like this in the modern era. Spurs are not as rich as the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United or Arsenal, but they are nevertheless a member of English soccer’s so-called ‘big six’. Yet this weekend, they are in danger of dropping out of the country’s top 20.

To avoid that ignominy, Tottenham must draw with or defeat Everton. A loss for the home team would send them down if West Ham beat Leeds United across the capital at the London Stadium.

Everton Have Dipped in Form at Precisely the Worst Time

A few weeks ago, Everton were in the mix for European qualification. A top-eight finish is sufficient for a place in continental competition this time around, a more generous offering than usual, and the Toffees were one of several sides hoping to outperform expectations by claiming one.

Unfortunately for David Moyes and his team, those dreams are now over. Everton's form has deserted them at the worst possible moment. They head into the final weekend on the back of a six-game winless streak. Everton are thus three points off the top eight, but they cannot climb that high because Chelsea and Sunderland, two of the teams above them, play each other on Sunday, which means it is impossible for them both to lose.

At the start of the campaign, Everton were not necessarily targeting European soccer. Yet it still feels like a missed opportunity. Had they won just two of the matches they have drawn in the last six, Everton would be in the top eight right now. As it is, they have nothing to play for on matchday 38.

Still, putting that sense of disappointment to one side, it has been a broadly positive season for Everton. For one, they have not been involved in a relegation battle as in some recent campaigns. Everton have also successfully transitioned to a new home, the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Moyes, a former West Ham United manager who had two spells at the London Stadium, has admitted he would like to see his former team stay up, but it remains to be seen whether his players are as motivated in a game with nothing riding on it as far as they are concerned.

Tottenham Hotspur Keen to Put Nightmare Season Behind Them

Whatever happens this weekend, Tottenham Hotspur will not look back on this season with any fond memories. Sometimes there are pitch invasions when a team wraps up survival in their last game. There will not be one on Sunday even if Roberto De Zerbi's team win 5-0.

West Ham United will draw hope from the fact that Tottenham’s record in front of their own fans this season is abysmal. Spurs have won just two games on their own soil, and one of those was on the opening weekend of the campaign. Even De Zerbi, who has generally improved the team, has yet to win at home.

The counterbalance to that is Everton’s form. They have been poor in recent weeks, seeming to run out of steam before the finish line. They will defend in a low block, which could frustrate Tottenham, but it is more questionable whether they will be able to carry enough of a threat going the other way while remaing solid at the back.

All things considered, we favor Tottenham in this seismic showdown for the north London outfit.
