Tottenham Hotspur vs. Arsenal Prediction

Arsenal Know They Must Hit New Heights to Win Title

When they last won the Premier League title in 2003/04, Arsenal amassed 90 points and did not lose a single game. Last season, they accumulated 89 points - but that was only enough for second place in the standings. There is one reason for that: Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

The reigning champions are seeking a fifth title in a row having become the first team in English soccer history to claim four on the bounce last season. City have made an ominous start to the current campaign, picking up nine points from a possible nine by beating Chelsea 2-0, Ipswich Town 4-1 and West Ham United 3-1. Their hunger remains as intense as ever.

It is still early days, of course, but the chances of City having an off-season look slim. That means Arsenal may well have to better their all-time record points tally to win the title. It is a big ask, despite the impressive progress they have made under Mikel Arteta over the past few years. City are seasoned winners and they will not give up the trophy without a fight.

Arsenal trail by two points heading into the weekend, but that sort of deficit is not significant at this early stage of proceedings. Having said that, Arteta will want to avoid falling five points shy of the summit of the standings, which is what would happen if City beat Brentford on Saturday and Arsenal lose to Spurs a day later.

The Gunners have set the pace in the last two seasons, with Guardiola’s men coming on strong after Christmas. It would be a psychological blow were Arsenal to let City open up a lead in the first few months of the campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur Could Do with a Victory This Weekend

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to qualify for the Champions League in 2024/25. They missed out by just two points last time out, when fifth place was not sufficient to book a spot in the competition. It may well be this time around, although that will depend on how well English clubs perform in Europe.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have had a mediocre opening. They dropped two points on the opening weekend, drawing 1-1 with Leicester City. A 4-0 thumping of Everton followed, before Spurs went down 2-1 to Newcastle United prior to the September international break.

That was a disappointing result for Tottenham, who controlled much of the match only to depart empty-handed. Their problem was a familiar one: Spurs outshot Newcastle, but their opponents had the better chances. That was in large part down to Newcastle’s successful exploitation of Tottenham’s high defensive line.

Most top teams in Europe play that way these days, but Postecoglou’s side are still searching for the right balance. Right now they are too easy to score against; unless they can rectify that issue, it will be difficult to achieve a top-four finish.

Arsenal are a smart side. If they spot a weakness in the opposition, they usually take full advantage. There is little chance that Postecoglou will abandon his approach, but tweaks must be made to avoid presenting golden opportunities to a team as strong as Arsenal.

North London Derby Should Produce Entertainment Again

The north London derby has been one of the most consistently entertaining fixtures in the Premier League for at least 15 years now. Both teams have had spells of overall superiority in that time, although Arsenal have got the better of things recently. Indeed, Spurs have won just one of the last seven meetings with their chief adversaries stretching back to 2021.

The games between the pair last term certainly delivered. First was a pulsating 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium in September, followed by Arsenal’s 3-2 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April. That result kept them on track in the title race, but Manchester City’s relentless ultimately won the day.

The prize for winning matches like this is three points - the same as a game against a relegation contender. But victory over the other would be a huge boost to Tottenham or Arsenal. For the former, it would bring renewed belief in the Postecoglou project. For the latter, it would send a signal that Arterta’s team are ready to push City all the way once more.

From a betting perspective, the win market is not the most interesting. Instead, go for both teams to score and over 2.5 goals. That wager would have paid out in both north London derbies in 2023/24 and neither manager will take a backwards step this time around.

Indeed, for better or worse Tottenham seek to take the initiative in every game they play under Postecoglou. This should be an open encounter featuring plenty of goalmouth action.
