Iraq and Norway will play their first World Cup match of the 21st century today. Iraq has been absent from soccer’s flagship event since 1986, while Norway has not taken part in the competition since 1998. Both national teams cannot wait to get going this summer, although having been drawn in the same group as France and Senegal, neither side will have things easy over the next fortnight.

Iraq and Norway had very different qualification experiences. For Iraq, it was a marathon. It had to go through 21 matches to make it to North America, including a play-off in Asia followed by an interconfederation play-off. For Norway, it was a sprint.
