Get ready for the biggest game in North American club soccer, the most significant rivalry in Liga MX, and a battle of giants between the two most successful teams in Mexico’s top flight.
Even though they’ll be making the trip west, America will be the slight favorites thanks to their 7-1-2 (W-T-L) run in the start of the 2021 Clausura. That said, Chivas are a bit of a wildcard this season, and although they’ve looked fairly average in recent games, there’s reason to believe they’ll throw caution to the wind on Sunday.
Chivas have been here before. After looking like the underdogs in their last two meetings in late 2020, they were able to clinch two surprise victories over America.

There’s a tendency to ignore stats, points, and momentum when it comes to Liga MX’s most high-profile rivalry matches — and perhaps with good reason.
Time and time again, analysts and pundits have been left scratching their heads as they fail to anticipate and calculate the hidden factors of clasicos, the intensity that could lie within hungry minnows, and of course, the added pressure that could flip the script at any moment.
So on Sunday, when Chivas host the slight favorites America, many fans of the underdogs (undergoats, if you will) seem to have a belief that three points might not be too far out of reach.
After all, they did defeat America twice in a row last season in the Liga MX playoffs. Sure, it took some golazos to change the outcome, but those moments in themselves are the expectedly unexpected events of rivalry games that constantly give hope to even the most distant of longshots.
And even if you’re not ready to throw out those stats that point to America having a better season overall, some of those numbers may actually shine an opportunity for Chivas this weekend.
Let’s take a look at Chivas’ most impressive result of the season so far, a 3-1 away win over current title-holders Leon. In that early February match, Chivas lost the possession battle to Leon and were forced to play a more direct game during the occasional moments they stole back the ball.
And it was incredible to watch. With plenty of paces, Chivas were decisive with their counters that carved apart Leon’s defense. By halftime, they were up 2-0, and once the final whistle blew, Chivas finished with a dominant 3-1 win.
As for their two losses, it was interesting to note a near opposite switch. Against weaker opponents like San Luis and Juarez, Chivas were given more possession of the ball but had a difficult time creating chances for themselves. Both of their opponents countered Chivas and claimed victories over Los Rojiblancos.
America’s playing style demands being proactive, and if they commit too many numbers forward, it could be Chivas once again who create dangerous counters.
At the risk of criticizing a team that are heading into the weekend with only one draw and two losses, America haven’t exactly been forceful and powerful in their wins.
As mentioned in previous articles, there’s gradual progress that has been associated with them, typically doing just enough to sneak by with narrow or low-scoring wins. And although there aren’t too many faults, there is room left for improvement.
America have needed some late opportunities finding the back of the net and a few decisive moments to work in their favor, and up against Chivas, there are no guarantees that they’ll be the ones who claim the consequential moment that could define the winner.
Regardless of their long list of draws, Chivas have done a great job of consistently finding the back of the net. Led by striker Jose Juan Macias, who has six goals to his name, a handful of other unanticipated names have helped with chance creation and completion.
Striker Alexis Vega has been brilliant with his four assists, defender Miguel Ponce has stepped up in vital moments with his two goals and one assist, winger Isaac Brizuela has two assists to his name, left-back Alejandro Mayorga has scored twice since February, and Uriel Antuna has two assists in tow.
We aren’t even including midfielder Jesus Molina — who is currently recovering from an injury — but has three goals so far in 2021.
There are plenty of options for Chivas to find the back of the net, and even if Macias has an off day, a few others could once again help in support.
