America’s resurgence and development under new manager Santiago Solari could soon come to a grinding halt. Although there has been much praise about the project that has so far made them one of the top two teams in Mexico’s first division, that’ll now be put to the test this weekend when they face 2020 Club World Cup finalists Tigres.
Don’t pay too much attention to Tigres’ position in the league table either. As expected, they need a few weeks (months?) to shake off their rust before hitting their stride. With more talent and experience than nearly every other team in the region, this Saturday could be the watershed moment in which Tigres start to finally take this season seriously.
Although this is leaning towards gut feeling territory, this is when Tigres start to make their scheduled climb up the league table.

Tigres really and truly are a sleeping giant in Mexico.
Widely recognized as the most dominant team of the last decade, and recently giving some headaches to Bayern Munich in the Club World Cup, Tigres are about to awaken from their winter slumber.
Which is nothing new. I’ve written about it beforehand, but manager Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti regularly sees the start of most seasons — and especially the Clausura tournaments that follow a short break — as a preseason of sorts before eventually charging into the playoffs.
This year is no different. With up to 12 teams now making the playoffs, and also a busy schedule that had them going to Qatar for the Club World Cup in February, Ferretti can now finally set his sights on making up for lost ground in Mexico’s domestic competition. And luckily for Tuca, he just so happens to have what is arguably the most talented team in the league.
Tigres need a statement to kick off their run, and there would be nothing better than claiming a win over a potentially overworked top two team.
For all of the talk of America not focusing on the 2021 Concacaf Champions League, it was fascinating to see them field a fairly strong XI during Wednesday’s match against Olimpia in the first of two legs in the round of 16.
Unlike Cruz Azul who sent a “B” squad over for their own respective CCL game, America instead flew some of their best to Honduras in the 2-1 win over Olimpia. The match wasn’t an easy one either. Although Olimpia were more than happy to sit back and concede possession, they ultimately ended up outshooting America in the Central American battle.
Nonetheless, it’s a win for Las Aguilas and for Solari, but they’ll need to quickly prepare for what will be one of their toughest matches of the season just three days later.
Of the very few and small certainties that one can point to in Liga MX, a strong end to most seasons for Tigres’ Andre-Pierre Gignac is one of them.
The French striker, like Tigres, seems to have been on cruise control for most of the 2021 Clausura. With double-duty in the Club World Cup, the veteran has only managed to collect two goals and one assist in nine games.
That’s out of the ordinary for him, and after having plenty of weeks of subpar performances, Gignac should soon find his typical late-season form that’ll inevitably have his squad skyrocketing up the table.

America aren’t done with the CCL. After flying over to Honduras, gaining a narrow draw on Wednesday, and then flying back to Mexico to face Tigres this weekend, Solari and his men will then need to prep to face Olimpia once again four days later on April 14th.
With a narrow lead in the CCL series, he’ll need to properly balance out his squad and probably bench at least a couple of starters in order to rest them for another mid-week international match.
And looking even further past the mid-week CCL game, that roster balance has even more important when you recognize that they face crosstown rivals Cruz Azul on the 17th.
Solari can’t afford to go all out against Tigres, thereby giving the home side a window for a big result this Saturday.
