Toluca have been an absolute wildcard in 2021. Capable of falling apart defensively, being involved in a 4-4 shootout and also keeping up with some of Liga MX’s elite, no team has been more unpredictable than Los Diablos Rojos in the Clausura tournament.
That said, their defensive issues are a massive weak link, and regardless of the fact that they will be heading into the weekend with more goals than any other Liga MX side, they seem to have allowed more in their own net in recent weeks.
In steps Monterrey. With three consecutive wins in all competitions and only one loss in their last seven Liga MX matches, manager Javier Aguirre and his men should have plenty of reasons to feel confident.
Go with the favorite that’ll be visiting from out of town.
Monterrey for the win.

Hidden in plain sight behind other dominant teams like Cruz Azul and Club America, Monterrey has consistently done well throughout the last few months.
One of just four teams that have never fallen further than 7th place, Los Rayados have only lost twice in their 12 matches to date. Under Aguirre and thanks to a deep roster, Monterrey’s defense has also thrived with little-to-no issues during most weekends. Although they do still seem to miss the occasional big chance in attack, their solidity in their own final third has rarely faltered.
Which is all great news for Monterrey fans. With the knowledge that the difference between their team being a title-contender and a title-favorite could come down to slight improvements in the attack, the future is undoubtedly bright for the club that is due for more silverware.
Looking ahead to Sunday, Monterrey could take another step towards that goal against a Toluca roster that are losing significant steam.

If we’re looking at the previous three games for all Liga MX sides, no team has allowed more goals than Toluca. With eight allowed in their draw and two losses, Toluca’s defensive shape has been incredibly questionable as they’ve allowed goal after goal after goal.
At one point early on in the season, this wasn’t much of a problem for them due to the fact that they were able to rack up plenty of goals themselves in high-scoring and energetic performances.
Unfortunately, that gung-ho approach has seemed to have deprived them of energy by the midpoint of the season. Once dominating the top of the table, Toluca are now quickly ascending further and further down with each passing week.
Unless if their defense sorts out their organizational mess immediately and unexpectedly, they could potentially find themselves in another heavy defeat.
Earlier on Thursday, it remained up in the air if Monterrey would utilize some of their most talented options in the mid-week Concacaf Champions League match against Atletico Pantoja. Would they take a more serious approach like Club America (who went with some of their usual starters in the CCL), or would they take more of a chance like Cruz Azul (who fielded mostly reserves)?
It ended up being more of the latter than the former, much to the relief of Monterrey fans who were worried about the following match against Toluca. Although a few key players were in the mid-week XI, the starting roster was undoubtedly an experimental one with plenty of backups.
A 3-0 CCL win followed, and with many of their marquee players not having to play a full 90 minutes, Monterrey will now be heading into the weekend with plenty of energy saved for Sunday’s Liga MX clash.
There’s no doubt that Toluca can find the back of the net. With more goals than any other team, they’ve constantly been a headache for countless opponents.
And yet, could that be said of them recently? Granted, they have six goals in their last six games, but four of these emerged from the enthralling and chaotic 4-4 result against Puebla last month. Overlooking that match, Toluca have only scored twice in their other five matches — which is a bit bizarre for a team that once had the best-attacking numbers in Liga MX.
As mentioned earlier, they’re a wildcard through and through.
And although it wouldn’t be a shock if they were to get a good result against Monterrey, more than likely, they’ll face more problems than their opposition and emerge from the weekend with another loss.
