The New York Yankees haven’t been great this season, but they’re heavy favorites to win the AL East. The division has been defined by averageness, and a series against the Padres is precisely what they need to get back on track. 

New York has played down to lackluster teams, but luckily for the Yankees, the Padres have been one of the best teams in baseball at 22-11. San Diego’s Kryptonite is playing on the road as they’re just 8-7, which is one of the reasons I’m backing the Yankees. 

Both pitchers have been excellent this season. Nick Pivetta is 5-1 with a 1.78 ERA and a 0.82 WHIP. He has allowed just 21 hits in 35.1 innings with 39 strikeouts. 

Carlos Rodon will take the hill for New York. This season, he has recorded a 3.43 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. He struggles with walking, but he is better than Pivetta when he locates.

The Yankees should have a sense of urgency after losing a series to the Yankees. After sweeping Pittsburgh to start their East Coast road trip, San Diego is due for regression.

White Sox vs Royals (7:40 PM, EST)

I’m a big proponent of fading the White Sox. Chicago isn’t the worst team in baseball, but they have won just ten games this season. 

Chicago has been awful on the road at 3-13, where the Royals have gone 11-5 at home. Kansas City is excellent in its stadium and has the talent to sweep the White Sox. 

Cole Ragans will pitch for Kansas City. He has been solid this season, with a 4.4 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. 

Ragans has surrendered just 27 hits in 30.2 innings. He has great strikeout ability, and the White Sox have multiple batters who aren’t competitive against overpowering pitchers. 

Shane Smith is one of the best starters for the White Sox, but Chicago’s bullpen isn’t worth trusting if this game is close down the stretch.

Mariners vs. Athletics (10:05 PM, EST)

Their young talent is playing well, and the front office has complemented these players with under-the-radar veterans. 

Even though the Athletics have been impressive, Seattle is a better team, and this should be clear throughout the contest. Bryce Miller will take the ball for Seattle, and he is 2-3 with a 3.52 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. 

He has underperformed this season, but Oakland doesn’t have batters who take a lot of walks. If Miller can get his strikeout pitches working, Seattle should cruise in this contest.
