Best MLB Player Props October 17

Philadelphia Phillies vs Arizona Diamondbacks

My Pick: Zack Wheeler over 5.5 strikeouts (-135 at DraftKings Sportsbook)

Zach Wheeler took a small step backward in 2023 but still finished the season with the thirteenth-best record (13-6), nineteenth-best ERA (3.61), and the ninth-most strikeouts. He continues to be one of the Phillies’ top arms and has been at his best during the postseason. He owns a 2.37 ERA and 28 strikeouts across three starts (19 innings). That is a fantastic strikeout total, and it signals an easy cover of this bet tonight.

Wheeler faced the Diamondbacks on Monday and was fantastic in the win. He allowed two runs on three hits and struck out eight across six innings. The D-Backs couldn’t solve them, leading to several ugly strikeouts in critical moments. That start came on the road, but we don’t see him having any issues pitching at Chase Field. The 33-year-old was stellar on the road against the Braves in the NLDS, and Sunday’s atmosphere will not be nearly as hostile.

Houston Astros vs Texas Rangers

My Pick: Yordan Alvarez 2+ hits (+240 at FanDuel Sportsbook)

21+

This is our favorite prop bet of the weekend, as Yordan Alvarez has been on a tear in the postseason. He has a .417 batting average, six home runs, and 13 RBIs across nine games. The outfielder has had two hits in his four straight games and has done so six times in the playoffs. The Astros will have a chance to put the Rangers away on Sunday, and Alvarez is just the guy to do it.

Alvarez’s playoff success comes as little surprise, given how well he played in the regular season. Injuries limited him to 114 games, but he still finished with a .293 batting average, 31 home runs, 97 RBIs, and .990 OPS. He is a rare slugger who can also hit for average, making him an MVP candidate when he is healthy.

One last reason we love this bet is that Nathan Eovaldi will be on the mound for Texas. The veteran is 3-0 with a 2.29 ERA in the postseason, but the Astros found some success against him. They scored three runs on five hits, one coming from Alvarez. The left fielder has faced Eovaldi 13 times, posting nine hits, three doubles, two home runs, and five RBIs. Considering how well he is swinging the bat, we expect Alvarez to raise those numbers tonight.
