Adam Wainwright had one of the worst endings to a career in big league history. Wainwright is a legendary pitcher in St. Louis, who helped lead the Cardinals to a World Series championship. However, he has now become a laughingstock in Major League Baseball.
Wainwright’s outings have been terrible throughout the year, and they’re getting worse. The pitcher has allowed 24 earned runs in his past five starts. He had one great performance in this span against the Padres but just allowed six runs on eight hits to Atlanta with four homers.
Atlanta’s offense is better than Baltimore's, but the Orioles have been blasting the baseball all season. Baltimore has one of the best offenses in the game, and we believe they will get to Wainwright.
Yet, we’re going to side with Wainwright here because his props have become so low. His innings total is listed at 14.5, which means he would need to go five innings to hit this number. He went 5.2 innings against the Braves and was awful, but they left him on the mound.
St. Louis isn’t playing for anything at this point in the year, and this is Wainwright’s swan song. They’re going to let him struggle on the mound, which is a good sign for him throwing at least five innings in this matchup. As long as he doesn’t give up eight runs in the first inning, we should be safe with this prop.
The Atlanta Braves will cruise into the playoffs as the top team in the National League. They must beat the Dodgers in the playoffs, but they have the roster to do so, with great pitching and hitting. One of the best pitchers this season for Atlanta has been Max Fried.
Fried has four quality starts in his past five games, and they have been against some talented offenses like the Dodgers and Giants. He has commanded the zone in nearly every start, and this is why we like him to have a strong performance against the Phillies.
He is 7-1 on the season with a 2.7 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. He isn’t the most dominant strikeout pitcher, but he has a lot of booming performances on the hill when it comes to the metric. He fanned the Dodgers 10 times in seven innings on September 1, so he has the ability to strikeout batters today against the Phillies.
Fried’s strikeout total is listed at 5.5 and he has gone over this number in three of his past four games. The Phillies' offense is strong, which is why they were in the World Series last season, but they’re loaded with swing-and-miss.
The team is 8th in baseball for most strikeouts, which gives us confidence Fried can deliver in this spot. Take the over on 5.5 strikeouts.
Alex Bregman is having another strong campaign, and this should continue through the remainder of the year. When the Astros have needed a big hit, Bregman has historically delivered for his team.
Houston will face the Oakland Athletics today at home, and JP Sears will take the ball. He is one of the best wings for the A’s, but his stats have still been average at best. He is 4-11 with a 4.51 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. Over 151.2 innings, he has allowed 31 homers.
Sears struggles to keep the ball in the yard, and Bregman is a multifaceted hitter, so the matchup is ideal on Tuesday. He is batting .270 on the season with 22 homers and 93 RBI, and has gone over his 1.5 hits + runs + RBI line in three of his past five contests.
Look for Bregman to bounce back after a rough outing yesterday. He can hit this total with one swing, and should also have plenty of RBI chances throughout the game.
