Best MLB Player Props September 20

The stars are out on Wednesday in Major League Baseball, especially from a pitching perspective. With several high-profile arms taking the hill, there are no shortage of prop betting angles to attack, including the ones below which make up our MLB prop bets of the day.

Seattle Mariners vs Oakland Athletics

My Pick: George Kirby to record the win (+115 at PointsBet)

The first MLB prop bet that we recommend taking on Wednesday comes from the AL West matchup between the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics. In that game, look for the Mariners to pick up a win, and for starting pitcher George Kirby to get the decision in the contest for Seattle.

So far this season, wins have not been a given for Kirby, as he enters this game with a record of 10-10 on the year. But he does have a respectable ERA of 3.57 and he should put his team at an advantage in the starting pitching department. Against an Athletics team that is giving some new arms a try on the mound, Kirby should be able to put his team in a winning position before departing from the game.

Oakland is starting Joey Estes in this game, who is making his major league debut for the Athletics. Estes was a part of the trade that sent Matt Olson to the Atlanta Braves, as he was Atlanta’s 14th ranked prospect at that time. He is in for a rude welcome to the majors in this game, as Kirby should pick up the win at his expense.

Toronto Blue Jays vs New York Yankees

My Pick: Kevin Gausman over 7.5 strikeouts (-125 at DraftKings Sportsbook)

All season long, Kevin Gausman has been one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. Expect that to continue on Wednesday, when the Toronto Blue Jays visit the New York Yankees in the Bronx. In this game, expect the Blue Jays to come away with a win, but for our prop bets on Wednesday, we are focused on Gausman going over his total of 7.5 strikeouts.

So far this season, Gausman has faced the Yankees twice and has worked 14 innings against them in those two starts. In those 14 innings, Gausman has struck out 21 Yankee batters, and has allowed just two earned runs. Look for him to continue to have the Yankees’ number in this game, especially with the struggles of the Yankee lineup being so well-documented.

This season, the Yankees rank 24th in the major leagues in runs scored, a far cry from their typical offensive standards. New York is just a few runs ahead of teams like the Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates on the season, as hitting is just not the strong suit of this club in 2023. Look for Gausman to take advantage of that while running up his strikeout total on the day.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs Chicago Cubs

My Pick: Pirates under 3.5 total runs (-115 at PointsBet)

Our final MLB prop bet for Wednesday comes from the NL Central showdown between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs. This is a huge game for the Cubs, who are still fighting for their place in the NL Wild Card, and hoping to qualify for the postseason. Fortunately for Chicago, they have Justin Steele on the mound for this one, which should mean a low-scoring performance from Pittsburgh.

So far this season, Steele is second in the league in wins with a 16-4 record, and is second in ERA at 2.73 as well. With the Cubs’ season hanging in the balance, he should bring his best stuff at Wrigley Field, where he is already 12-2 on the season in 17 home starts.

Even when they are not facing an ace pitcher, the Pirates have not been lighting up the scoreboard. Pittsburgh is tied for 25th in the league in runs scored, sitting just behind the aforementioned Yankees while struggling to put anything together offensively. Look for the Cubs ace to shut down this anemic offense and to deliver the Cubbies a huge win for their Wild Card hopes.
